Documenting the making of the Lagan coat in a fuschia Harris Tweed…

I'm not on social media so thought I would create a thread here to document and share the making of the Itch to Stitch Lagan Coat🧥in a fuschia Harris Tweed that I treated myself to with some birthday money last month, adding photos as I go ending with a final pic of a fabulous coat 🤩. I know that this will be a challenge but I am absolutely set on this particular coat so... let the challenge begin...

So far I have made a toile from calico with just the main pieces to check the fit, delighted to find that the bodice fits perfectly without any adjustment to the length 😄 (I'm 4ft 11 ish) and I just need to take a bit of length out of the skirt. So I've shortened the bottom pieces at the adjustment line and am now ready to cut the fabric. 😱

I absolutely love this Adele, cannot wait to see the progress. That fabric is so beautiful, will it be lined?

Yes fully lined and I'm going to use this, I know a pink/purple would go better but the shop didn't have that colour and that's the fun with lining, you can use whatever you like.

Looking forward to seeing this come to life! This coat was on my list but I decided to try another one in the end (Atelier Jupe Alex Coat), although I have yet to make it in my good wool fabric - hopefully this year! I actually had some of that paisley lining in the pink/purple, which I used for lining an Ilford Jacket. Love your Harris Tweed too.

I have very very carefully cut out the main fabric taking care to match the horizontal lines across the fabric pieces 🤞🏼after the advice from the ladies on the social, with some "help" from Hamish 🐈 who was fascinated with this fabric.

I don't need the lining apart from the pocket until the main fabric is sewn together so I'm going to sew up the main fabric before I cut out the lining.

Let the sewing commence... I've got the bodice all sewn up and I'm really pleased with how well I've managed to match the horizontal lines on the fabric. I have realised that I have sewn the collar on the wrong way up so I do need to unpick that and reattach. Other than that so far so good 😊

Wow, that is looking fabulous!!

Well done on your progress so far.  (So glad Hamish is able to do quality control for you, it's the purrfect job for him).

You've done a great job with the pattern matching.

The skirt is on.
Part of me is a little disappointed that with the back of the coat the fabric pattern is off so the difference in the bodice and the skirt is really obvious.
However the front left of the coat has matched perfectly (the other side doesn't) completely by accident on the vertical lines. The colour blocks are pretty close across the whole front and the back is okay I think even though a little off.

You have done such a great job- the pattern matching looks so good, it's a really hard thing to do especially when you have so many seams creating different shapes. This is not easy you should be really proud of yourself

Thank you, I do like it and the sewing is pretty neat as I've been really concentrating and stopping myself from rushing it. I'm sure when I've finished it, it will look amazing 😊

That looks really good. You were always going to have difficulty matching the plaid on that design so I think the work you have done is great. Most people won't notice the offset on the back - have you seen ready to wear stuff?!! It's only us sewists who are so critical of our own work.

Does this coat have pockets? I really like this pattern and have been contemplating buying it.

Sleeves are now on, I had initial sewn them on the wrong way wrong so unpicked and put them on the right way. Sleeve caps are in place so I just need to sew in the shoulder pads which are in the post. And then the lining.

And the lining... all I need now is the shoulder pads to pop in and then I can attach the lining to the main coat and do the button holes. 😊

That's looking fabulous and you've done it so quickly! I'd still be dithering about pattern placement at this stage !!

I've now managed to sew in the shoulder pads and the lining (after unpicking part of it the first time as the collar mysteriously disappeared when turned out 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️), I've top stitched around the outside to keep everything in place. I need to do the same for the cuffs, sew up the gap in the lining and the to attach my self covered buttons. It seems to have really gained shape now the outer and lining are attached as everything has been pulled in.
And I remembered to sew my labels in, a Harris Tweed one that came with the fabric and I found tartan homemade ones from Little Rosie Cheeks that go very nicely.
I have realised that there is no hanging loop in this coat so I need to have a think 🤔about what to do and potentially unpick enough of the collar to add one before sewing up the gap in the lining.

I promise to get some better quality photos when it's finished outside to show the colour better as these were taken late at night whereas the buttons were day time but the same fabric.

Wow Adele it looks sooo good! The labels are such a brilliant touch and hats off on the self covered buttons - I honestly don't think anything else would have been right! I can't wait to see how it looks on!

Looks stunning, love the colours.

I've used a chain hanger on coats, which you can hand sew on, Amazon, Etsy etc have them, saves unpicking your beautiful collar

And I am done! One Harris Tweed Itch to Stitch Lagan coat completed 🤩

This has been such a fun challenge. I added a chain hanging loop so I didn't need to unpick the collar to add one and after making a bit of a mess trying to hand sew a button hole realised that I could do a straight line of button hole stitching without using the button hole foot so that made that a lot easier.

Handling the coat to sew the lining in and the button holes was a bit awkward as it's pretty heavy.

I am so pleased with it, the fit is pretty good and I have room for a thicker jumper underneath. I did adjust the length as I'm 4ft 11" and it sits at just above knee length, which is what I wanted. Really pleased with the pattern, there were a couple of head scratching moments but I think that's because I'm fairly new to sewing not the instructions, it looks exactly as I had hoped and very similar to the coats I saw in the Isle of Harris shop when I bought the fabric

I don't think I could hide at all in it, I think I'd be visable from space, its so bright. I love it! And it's been so amazing to have somewhere to share it without being on social media. 🥰

Adele!! This is so incredible! It looks beautiful you have done a fabulous job on it! I've been sewing over a decade and I've yet to tackle a coat like this one.

I'm so pleased you've enjoyed sharing and documenting the journey here, it's been really fun to watch and I hope it inspires others to do the same.

Thanks so much for sharing this making process on the forum, and what a beautiful result. The coat is amazing. It's really encouraging to read your account of how you've approached the process, worked through any issues and ended up with a fabulous coat - very inspiring!

Such a nice way to share information without using social media. I don't use it either; I do still read what few old-style blogs there are about, but these are pretty few and far between these days. Most people today seem to prefer to post and consume their content via Intsa, Tik-Tok, FB, etc., and I don't want to use any of those platforms. So this was a lovely journey to follow along with in a much nicer environment away from the toxicity of so many of the popular socials. Thanks again - and great coat!
