Any tips on how to get going when you're in what seems like sewing paralysis. I have the desire to sew, all the tools and fabric and patterns but getting down to it is a problem. I love it when I do!
Sewing Paralysis

I would start with a small project, maybe one that you've sewn before an know what you're doing so that you are more likely to get a win rather than get discouraged by a tricky make
I have the same issue myself. I'm planning on having a big sort out of my sewing space then I'll pick an pattern that I know well and will be less stress to make than something new. Also sew in short bursts like 1/2 a day. Chelsea from Friday pattern co did that recently

My other tip is to sew a non-garment - like a bag or accessory, something that you don't need to worry about fitting and can just get immersed in the sewing

I've got loads of fabric, lots of ideas but not had time to sew over Christmas and the New Year.
Started to clear my craft room / office /laundry today so that I can create some clear space/head space to start a new project.
I've ordered a bag kit so think I'm going to try that first. I sewed a few garments just before Christmas and looking forward to doing more, but need a bit of breathing space first.
good luck with finding your sew-mo-jo. 👍

I think sewing a bag pattern is a great way to start sewing again - no fitting needed so can just enjoy the process!
Aaaaand, it's back!!!! I started by remodeling my office so that everything is to hand followed by some planning using a sewing planner. I've now progressed to prepping patterns and even cut two garments so I'm well on my way. Thx for the ideas and support!

Hoooray!!!

I've never sewn any garments and no idea where to start! I've made loads of small projects such as bags, cat toys, zippered purses etc but haven't found the confidence to make even the simplest of clothing. Any hints or tips? Got the gear but not much idea..🫤
Ooooh, a garment newbie!!! Suggest to start with a beginner friendly pattern (perhaps a hard copy is best to start with), easy fabric to sew like cotton or cotton poplin. Get really cheap fabric to start with and give it a bash!! It's so rewarding and you can do this! YouTube and Hayley also have loads of tutorials! I'm sure Hayley can help with an ideal pattern choice for beginners...

I'm at a similar stage. I ordered the Tilly and the Buttons Love at First Stitch book and I'm working my way through the projects as they're supposed to build upon your skills with each one. I'm starting with pyjamas.

You are in the right place Diane!! Tilly and the Buttons would always be my recommendation for a new garment maker, their patterns are so clear and really hold your hand, plus they have lots of blogs and videos that expain some of the steps a bit further.
I would give the Tilly and the Buttons Jamie PJ bottoms a try - you can use a fabric that's easy to work with like a cotton poplin or lawn. You only really need your hip measurement as the elastic in the waist will ensure it fits there. They are a great first garment.

Loving this kind of encouragement Tonia! We are all each others biggest cheerleaders.

That book is ideal for building up your skills, the pyjamas are great - I still have my first pair I made from this book, although unfortunately they don't fit me anymore but I'll still always be proud of them

Aww, thank you for the encouraging comments, very much appreciated! I'll definitely start with Tilly and the Buttons patterns! Thanks everyone ❤️

I've just finished my first bag attempt and now on to a matching laptop bag.
Hi Diane! Something that worked for me when I started sewing garments was to make patterna that had videos on YouTube. My first garment was the Fawn Dress by Common Stitch and turned out amazing! It was a simple construction and the video helped a lot. Good luck! 🍀

I have found the same problem the past few weeks. Since my sewing injury with a rotary cutter and finger on new years day. I feel it's knocked my confidence but I've got so many plans nd ideas. I may start making a project bag as it shouldn't be too complicated.
Why don't you switch to scissors for now till that confidence builds?!

Oh no!! That sounds nasty, don't let it stop you from creating though!
