A Win And A Loss

I made the Merchant & Mills Quinn Trousers a few weeks back. First time with an M&M pattern. Used a lovely bottom weight cotton herringbone with just a titch of lycra I found from an Etsy shop. My measurements put me in a suggested size 12.

Now I can already hear you say it as I said it myself but dismissed it (read: I know this is my own fault), I should have made a muslin. I should have measured the pattern pieces. I should have at least trusted the finished measurement chart over the size chart (but really, who puts 4”+ ease for a waist on tailored trousers?! I was doubtful). But I lived dangerously and reaped the “reward” for reckless behavior! Trust the finished measurement chart-there really is 4”+ ease in the waist alone.

Pattern drafting=superb. Perfect mirrored welts. Perfect buttonholes. Even the back tab came out SO.WELL 😩 I adore these trousers. But they fall off of me 😢 So back to tracing off a size down (yes, the finished measurement chart says the next smaller size is 4” different! I still doubt so I will measure the actual pieces this time) and testing with not-lovely fabric, in shorts length JUST.IN.CASE.

Wish me luck!

Oh nooo!!! These are so beautifully sewn, this is such a shame! 4" ease in the waist is insane - this must be a mistake surely?! I'd get in touch with Merchant and Mills and query it because that has to be wrong!

Could you thread some elastic through the back waist band? I know it won't be the style you're hoping for and you might need to remove the tab, but you might at least have a wearable pair of trousers!

Oh good thinking-I hadn’t thought to reach out to them! They are drafted so well I just figured it was my error. I have the next test pair cut so here’s to hoping they fit! I did try to fiddle with closing up the excess but unfortunately there is just too much bunching and then the hips flare out. Flat front+side closures=no good way to take them in without completely deconstructing. Oh well, they were at least fun to make! Thank you for the feedback 🩷

So nicely made too. I never understand so much ease at the waist for skirts or pants. Exactly how are they supposed to stay on? At least you know your next move.

Such a shame, they are so lovely! Could you add darts to the front and(more)darts to the back, plus elastic at the back to take up the rest of the excess? But I guess that's a lot of work (including removing the waistband).

There are darts in the back and then welt pockets over the darts so I can’t do anything with those though I guess I could add a second set….but I’d also have to figure out front excess to balance the back and as you said remove and redraft WB….yeah, I’m thinking I’d rather start from scratch 😂 Thanks for the suggestions!

Fabulous sewing shame about the fit but a few lessons learnt not all bad, I do hope you sort it out for your next pair. 🤞

For sure measure the pattern and yourself and compare both to the finished measurements chart! They really are lovely and I found the construction so fun!
