Hello lovely people!

I am wanting to start making my own undies as the highcut, mid-rise style undies I have always bought (Hanes), well, the quality has really suffered the last few years, they are lucky to last a few months before the seams come apart and the elastic shreds (I do buy the appropriate size so it isn't like I am squishing myself into a size too small).

Soooo...looking to start making my own, but have no idea where to begin, have never made undergarments before, but have been sewing for over 40 yrs. Any leads on pattern designers that you have found to be excellent? I appreciate any and all advice.  Thank you! :)

Hi Deborah, this is something I've been meaning to do with all those jersey remnants!! Tilly and th Buttons have an undies pattern which looks good - I haven't made any yet so can't speak from experience

Thanks so much! I will have a look at them. There are soooo many different designers out there, kind of overwhelming. I appreciate you taking the time to answer :)

No problem at all, I'd love to hear what else you find or which ones you try!

Hello

I have made knickers recently using the Iris pattern from Tilly and The Buttons. Super-easy to make and very comfortable. Different waist and leg hole heights to choose from, but make a toile first as I thought that I wanted a medium leg height, but it was still fairly low.

Thank you so much!! I appreciate you taking the time to provide advice, and making a toile is also a great idea. I think I can use an old t-shirt to test out fit. Thanks again :)

Ive made my own knickers , being inspired by https://courses.arkdefo.com/create-your-perfect-knickers. (At the time I bought the tutorial it was on offer. )

You get a full course on pattern drafting, which is really good, because we really want these to fit well don't we ? It a great scrap buster, finding the correct elastic can be a bit of a challenge.
Once I cracked the fit I used up a piece of jersey that I had lying around and now have a nice pile of me made knickers.
I then had to finally get around to Husbands underware , as he wanted some as well. Thread Theory are my place to go to for men's wear.....And they fit!

Thank you so much for this great info! :) I am off to check them out, and I agree, it is hard to find well fitting knickers!

I made 10 pairs of the Tilly and the buttons iris pants and they are great. I made a toile first as I thought I wanted the low rise ones but ended up making the rest high leg. I used all my scrap jersey and even did a pair with a lace insert.  Such an easy pattern to make as well. I pieced the pattern for the front and back so I could use different fabrics as it used more scraps of fabric.

I used the radcliffe pattern from Cashmerette, and I've found it great, especially as there are several possible styles. But recently I've also sewn panties based on my own measurments, it's a video from Liz sews on Youtube, and I am really happy with this, the fitting was perfect. The idea is to draw a block pattern, and then to transform it depending on your project.

Hope it helps !
