Helen's Closet Jackson T

Well, I used some cheap jersey from my stash to make this, and I am, on the whole very pleased - it was just what I was looking for - thank you Hayley. But I do need to ask how you finish the neckband?

I followed the instructions, but didn't use an overlocker (I am having some diffiuclty with that and will post in Another Place). But I do have a very good zig-zag edge stich on my Janome (Atelier 7) and it works well. My problem is that the seam then fold upwards towards the neck line, and it doesn't have enough stretch to fold down and lie flat.

For my first attempt I'm not too bothered. The neckband in itself lies very well, and it fits perfectly. But the seam edge is very near the neckline and I think with wear, may show. If I use an overlocker, then the seam will be smaller and it will be less of an issue.

I'd be glad of any advice - thanks!

Hi Annie, glad it went well.

Regarding the finishing on the neckband - all jersey have a tendancy to roll up here just after you've sewn them and need a little gentle coaxing. First you can trim that excess seam allowance around the neckline by half, then you would need to topstitch - so from the right side of the garment you'd be sewing a narrow zig zag around the neckline (not the neckband) very close to the seam making sure you catch in that seam allowance on the underside.

I actually have a tutorial on YouTube for this - please excuse the shakiness of the camera... we were trying out a style and I can't stand it now! But the actual tutorial is good!
