McCall's M8121 Jacket

upload-1536-1762823735-rwwY3DivdL.jpeg

I've started working on the McCall's M8121 jacket.

I've got the fabric. A beautiful fine green needlecord corduroy.

I've been tracing the paper pieces, all 26 of them, in my size. It's given me a great opportunity to see what's what and plan the construction of the jacket working alongside the pattern instructions.

Hopefully start to cut out fabric and lining in the next couple of days.

Has anyone made this jacket? I'd love to hear from you.

26 pattern pieces?! Wow! Well done for taking the time to trace them all. I've not seen this jacket but it looks beautiful!

It's the most pieces I've traced. Took a while believe me, but with some music playing I got into a rhythm. Funnily enough it gave me an opportunity to familiarise myself with the pattern. I'm really looking forward to getting my teeth into it.

That's a very good point actually, good way to see what's what! Have you made a start?

Made a start yesterday. Decided to topstitch, with the swapping out of needles and thread it's slowing me down a bit, but really enjoying the sewing bit. Obviously with tracing so many paper pieces it's nice now too focus on the actual sewing bit.

Hubby is watching golf all day, so I'll be finishing my cuppa, and making my way up to my sewing room to crack on with it shortly. Yay! X

Ah yes, topstitching definitely slows the process down a bit, but so worth it!

I also do my tracing and cutting with music.  Makes it feel more like a craft party rather than a chore.

I've been working slowly through this pattern. It's taken more time than I expected as I'm so cold!! I'm snuggled up under a blanket one end of the sofa most of the time rather than sewing. My husband runs hot and he's at the opposite end of the sofa in a t-shirt and jeans. We're playing war over the heating thermostat.

I've managed to finished the two front bodice pieces and sewn in the welt pockets. Love a welt pocket. Also finished the back with the armhole feature, very nice. Sewn the main body lining, but my oh my have I had a huge problem with inserting the zipper in the sleeve. Followed the instructions, but I've made a right mess of it. I've found a work around so doing that now.

I can't wait to see this made up Kim, have you had to adjust the pattern at all ? FBA ?

I've not tried it on yet. It's not at a stage where I can. Admittedly I jump around when sewing garments up. Do the sleeves, maybe the collar, then go back and do the lining. I'm so over the place.

I'm hoping to do some more on it tomorrow.

I'll keep the thread updated on progress

This time of year gets me too.  Dark and cold just screams bedtime to me.

Personally I'd like to hibernate. My hubby always says l should be a big brown grizzly bear. You could eat 70% of my body weight in yummy foods then hibernate for 4 months.

Definitely coming back as a bear!!! 🥰🤣🤣

What a mess I've made of my zipper sleeve.  The technique in the instructions is terrible. It's one of those moments when you read the step and know instantly something's going to go wrong. But blindly you carry on and end up with this! I haven't any spare fabric to recut the sleeve pieces, but I've found a workaround. Watch this space!

Oh no!!! Yikes, instructions in the big 4 patterns are always a little lacking aren't they? Glad you've found a possible solution

I should know better. But I just wanted to see if this technique worked. It looked pretty simple in the pattern lol.

Is it an exposed zipper?  I find the instructions for those lacking.

Yes, but it won't be for long 🤞

Oh I love the green fabric you're using! Yikes on the zip, do share your 'workaround' as I'd love to know how you fix it.

Managed to sort out the mess I made with my sleeve. Happy with the sleeve opening now.

Cracking on with the rest of the jacket. I'm getting there slowly.

I really must start taking pictures of my makes. I am so bad at it. I don't make anything like the amount of things you do, although I really do have the time. I have so many ideas, but rarely seem to action them. I made the most beautiful handbag recently for my sister, gave it to her and didn't take one single pic.

Hi Lynda, lovely to have you here! Please don't worry about not making much, all our circumstances are so different and it's no good comparing yourself. As long as you are doing what works for you then that's the bet thing to do.

And as for taking pictures, if you want to share what you're making they don't have to be "instagram perfect" photos, I sometimes prefer to take a quick snap of details, a garment laid out on the bed or floor or on the hanger so you can show what you want to talk about is great.

I'm terrible at taking photos. I just forget. I just take a snippet here and there. I don't put myself under any pressure to post. Just contribute as and when you feel it. It's all very chilled! X

Are the sleeves handstitched?

Yes they are. The instructions said to hand stitch. I'm sure there might be a way to machine stitch, but I love hand stitching so I was happy to relax and enjoy finishing the sleeve by hand.
