Chair In The Sewing Room

Hello all, I ducked off for awhile as I had a lot of stuff that needed my concentration. Yesterday I got back in the sewing room and my chair broke!

It was an old office chair - I actually can't remember how I aquired it, but I know it must be 20+ years old and it's not repairable, even by my skilled husband.

For now I have a perfectly OK dining room chair. However, I do miss being able to scoot, and given all my arthritis issues, I think a chair with proper back support would be best.

So I thought I'd seek the collective wisdom on the chairs you use, like and why.

Thanks in advance!

I have a Horn sewing chair, which I love. It is fully adjustable and supports my back. There are different fabric options.

You've made me think about what I sit on when I sew! I've never thought about it before, but actually I switch between my paternal grandmother's old wooden chair (for cutting out and pinning) and my maternal grandmother's kitchen stool (at my machine). Both were home seamstresses and the thought that they might have sat in those chairs to sew too has made me well up!

I don't recall making a decision about either of the chairs in my sewing room. The one in front of my machine is a folding chair I don't remember acquiring. The chair at my cutting table is a nice office chair that was an anniversary gift from my husband.

So much of my sewing set up is a mix of DIY, gifts, and "good enough for now".

I chose my current chair for two reasons:

  • My children are young adults and were familiar with the brand as it is a "gaming chair".

  • I had the chance to experience the chair in a bag making class at Sew Whatever Studios in Illinois.

I am in Texas, USA and this is the chair I chose the Kawai series models from Technisport: These are the current colors: https://technisportusa.com/collections/kawaii-series/products/pastel-fabric-gaming-chair

I have had my chair for three years now and it is still very comfortable and supportive.
Happy Chair Hunting! I hope you are sew successful in your search.

Thank you all, thgis has been an interesting thread. I have ended up with an Amazon basic office chair. This was recommended in a blog I found (but can't locate again!). I love the look of the chairs that some of you recommended, but after my expensive coverlocker, I really did have to go basic!

I am really enjoying this forum!

Late to this conversation. I got mine from Ikea £75 and it is wonderful! Covers come off for washing. https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/flintan-office-chair-beige-30492204/ Just in case anyone needs one!
