Making Sewing Friends

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this here. I'm Kells, I'm 28 years old and sewing is my favourite craft. I have anxiety and autism (I struggle a lot with this however, my family doesn't know as I don't feel comfortable enough to speak to them). I don't have any friends which leaves me feeling isolated at times since I have no one to share it with. I've tried posting on Reddit before to find people like me and maybe make some online friends I can feel excited about crafting with. I haven't joined any real life groups as many of the members are far above my age range. When I do meet people my age, I struggle to be social enough with them to maintain a friendship so, I thought this might be a low stress way for me to find my people.

I'm making a baby blanket for my sister's baby that's due in December, if anyone has any tips or tricks for adding the backing fabric or for adding binding on the edge, I'd love to hear them. If anyone also has any tips for making time to sew when you have a high stress job and busy lifestyle, I'd also really love to hear them xx

Hi Kells, really lovely to have you here so a massive welcome!! This is a lovely space to connect with other people who love sewing, and if you ever fancy trying out an online social with us we are super friendly. Feel free to email me before if you are anxious or have any questions about how it all works.

In terms of baby blankets I’m afraid I’m not the one to ask as I haven’t ever made a quilt but I know we have lots of people here who have and I’m sure they’ll be along with some tips!

Hi Kells,

Im autistic and adhd and so glad you're here.

I dont have advice for making a baby blanket. Just bought a sewing machine so very much a beginner, but my favourite resource is youtube or reddit when Im trying to figure something out. And then this community page as well.

I wish you all the best

Hi Kells,

I totally understand being put off in-person sewing groups because they seem like the wrong age group. I'm 37 and feel like I don't belong to older or younger cohorts. But here online there's such a good mix of people that age becomes irrelevant and everyone's been super nice.

Finding time to sew if you're busy can be tricky, but I find I can get a lot done whilst cooking dinner. 10 minutes for the oven to heat up, I pin some seams. 30 mins cooking time, spend 20 mins sewing those seams. I also set my morning alarm 30 minutes earlier than needed to give me sewing time before work. Doing a bit here and there might surprise you as to how much you can achieve.

As for the baby blanket, I knitted one for my sister's first baby...and so did everyone else! She was swamped with them! (And mine was the worst so I couldn't possibly advise you, sorry)
