Buying Knit Fabric On Line

I have decided to finally have a go at making a t-shirt using knit fabric. I have a pattern (Cashmerette Concord) but I have never purchased Knit fabric before.

The patters suggests the following fabric: Light- to mid-weight knit fabric such as rayon, cotton/lycra or poly/lycra jersey, or ITY with at least 20% crosswise stretch.

Can anyone recoment online fabric stores for this type of fabric - I am only looking for a cheep plain fabric to start with, but have no idea where to start looking.

Fabricland are my choice for cheap but decent fabric, with good customer service.

A word of caution about both the fabric and the pattern:

I have found that jersey behaves so differently (even when the weight and stretch is supposed to be the same) that it is difficult to learn from a toile in the way you would from a woven. Of course you need to do one, but be aware.

The Concorde is very curvy, it looks lovely in the pictures, but I needed to smooth out the waist curve to get a good fit.

I personally found that it worked better with a fabric more towards the 'mid' end.

Please take this in the helpful spirit in which it is intended, I have found the Concorde a good pattern. I'd also like to add that my T shirt toiles that don't work out are used as camisoles (in the winter, hard to think about that now!) and also as 'shells' under an open shirt / jacket.

I would stick with cotton jersey for your first time sewing with jersey. Rayon/viscose is lovely but can be like wrestling an octopus! Pound Fabrics might be a good place to look

I would suggest Poundfabrics.co.uk as well. They give information on the fabric and I have had some good buys from them. I too think cotton jersey would be a good one to start with - some of the other stuff can be slippery and slinky.

Pound Fabrics are really good, I use them all the time if not try Rainbow Fabrics altho their delivery timings are pretty poor from my experience
