When preparing a garment for cut and sew production, I have noticed that projects usually begin in one of three ways: with a sketch, a tech pack, or an existing reference sample.
Before developing the first garment sample, it helps to clarify:
• Garment measurements and fit
• Fabric type, weight, and stretch
• Construction and stitching details
• Trims, closures, labels, and other components
• Colorways and size requirements
• Any reference images or special design features
The first sample then provides an opportunity to evaluate the fit, proportions, fabric behavior, construction quality, and overall appearance before proceeding further.
For those who have developed garments from their own ideas, what information do you find most useful to prepare before cutting and sewing the first sample?
Do you prefer beginning with a sketch, a detailed pattern, a tech pack, or an existing garment for reference?
