Sew Socials

We finished this morning's sew social 3 hours ago and I've been reflecting on how powerful/restorative/helpful/energising/inspiring/welcoming/positive these sessions are.

Tomorrow, work beckons and it's time to tidy the sewing room and get ready for the real world and, as I tidy, I have found scraps and threads and trimmings that have reminded me how much I have achieved this month by sewing in community. I would have sewed without the socials, that's true, but 'my stuff' tends to be the thing that always falls off the daily list... Having the socials on my calendar gave me a reason to prioritise my sewing, my stuff, and I'm grateful to and for them.

If you haven't joined one of the live events yet, do give them a try. There's no pressure to do anything other than show up. You don't even have to sew - we've had sewing machine repairs, knitting, fabric discussions, crochet, pattern cutting and more - going on in the background. Nobody has to speak - but everyone can.

If your family, like mine, back away with glazed eyes if you try to talk to them about sewing or how challenging it is to wrangle a particularly length of viscose or how you hate doing buttonholes, do think about joining us! I have found my 'tribe' here and you might too!

Thank you for this post. I was thinking of joining in this week but was rather nervous to give it a go as I wasn’t sure what the ‘protocol’ was.

I hope you'll join us soon! No protocol. No dress code. No expectations. Just a warm welcome and the odd giggle!

We would absolutely love to see you there, like Donnie says there not really any protocol - show up as you are, join in with the chat as much or as little as you like. I try to go around and ask everyone what they are working on to make sure every in included, and then the chat just tends to flow.

If the group gets bigger than 15-20 we split into breakout groups and I move between the groups.

The only rule is to make sure you turn your microphone off whilst the sewing machine is whirring... or cutting paper (you'd be surprised how noisy that can be next to a microphone!)

I have loved the two I have joined so far. Hope to be there pretty much every week. Today, I got so much help for my fear of buttonholes. Inspired by what I learned and my practicing this morning, I will be starting a blouse with buttons tomorrow 😀

Well said, Donnie, I don't always speak a lot (well, ok, sometimes I do!!) but I love being in company with like minded people who understand my sewing hobby. It's lovely to see everyone doing their own thing and being able to ask questions or just share. And the off topic conversations are fun too. They really have become part of my weekly calendar.

Oh Donnie, I'm so touched by your words! Thank you thank you thank you, I can't tell you what it means to hear this and see how much you've gotten out of joining.

It has been such a pleasure to get to know you, along with everyone else that joins - we have regular faces and new ones who become regular faces all the time which is just so lovely.

It really doesn't matter what sort of a day I have had, these socials always lift me up in the most wonderful way, Thank you so much.

Yes. I find it is a time that I carve out to be productive while sometimes just listening to everyone chat. Don't get me wrong, I get my occasional comment in, but it's wonderful just listening to like-minded ladies talk about their projects.
