Ai Generated Patterns On Etsy

I created and shared a YouTube video yesterday discussing the rise of AI generated patterns that you can now find on Etsy - with contributions from Sew Over It and Ann Tilley about the work that actually goes into creating a sewing pattern, testing out one of these AI patterns (with hilarious results) and I even got into character myself as an AI slop peddler!

This is a really important conversation to have, not just in the sewing world, but in the wider craft industry as it's happening in other areas too - knitting, crochet, quilt, bag making to name just a few!

I watched this and found it excellent! Well done, hope it gets widely shared. The information from the pattern designers made it all make sense.

Hi! I actually found this community through this video. I am getting back into sewing clothes, and I almost fell into this trap on Etsy. Your video was incredibly informative. I have been adding indie makers and patterns I want to try to my TBS list, and making sure I am now clocking these AI accounts on ETSY and know what to avoid! Thank you for bringing more awareness to this!

I know this wasn't the main purpose of your video, but it made me appreciate the work that goes into creating a pattern, and how they decide on a final price. I've never bought a pdf pattern before because I thought they were over priced, but now I think I'd consider it - whilst avoiding the AI slop of course!

It was definitely a point I wanted to highlight - there's so much work that goes into creating those patterns, to be undercut by a £3 pattern is awful

I found this very interesting. I know little of AI, and the little I know has not given me any cause to think it useful. I also think that a good basic pattern from a designer who suits you can be adapted in various ways.

One post I saw on a Janome users group was asking about uneven bobbin winding. The AI "bubble" helpfully offered " how to wind a bobbin unevenly"!!
