Looking For Advice On Cosplay Piece: Replicating Yi From Nine Sols' Robe.

I am looking to recreate the yellow garmen worn by the character in the attached photo. I am pretty new to sewing, as I have thus far only made a simple cloak with ears on the hood for myself. Any advice/methods/instructions appreciated! I intend to wear it in the fall and spring. It will be knee length. I will need to know how to add text characters to the sleeves and how to approach making the garment. Do I just cut out identical front and back shapes and sew them together and go from there with finishing work and the like? What stitch(es) should I use, bearing in mind I do everything by hand? Thank you!

Hello Molly K. I can't easily open your links. However, I'm going to make a few simple suggestions onm both of your posts. I'm in the UK, where terminology may differ.

This garment looks like a kimono, which is easy to sew. a number of companies offer 'kimono style' patterns. Although you may not need a pattern, often for beginners, it's a good start point.

A useful resource is Folkwear Patterns. I have been using and adapting these for nearly 50 years. Traditional patterns are often easy to adapt because the construction is simple.

The sewing will be straightforward and if sewing by hand, use a backstitch (look up on YouTube) for the seams, and a simple hem.

You can apply the character by using double-sided interfacing. I do suggest trying this out on scraps first!

thank you for the suggestion! i will probably take the kimono idea and simplify it, because as far as i can tell, the garment is basically that but way simpler? worn open? :) thanks again!!

Agree with Annie here this looks like a fairly simple Kimono style garment - I have YouTube video on how to draft your own, it might not be exactly what you're looking for as it looks like you might want something where you can add a neck band and sleeve cuffs but there are plenty of patterns that would work as well - the Sew Over It Sylvia Robe could be good.

Then for the sleeve detail you can cut out the shapes and appliqué them on - using something called bondaweb which is a double sided adhesive and/or a simple stitch around the outside edge

I want to add, that whatever you do, try making a 'toile' in cheap fabric or old sheets. These are not difficult techniques, but you do need to find your way around them. And you may alrrady know this, but beware of thicker fabric (especially for your cloak) which can be so hot at conventions - unless of course you are planning to wear it outside.

I think my general rule of thumb is 'light fabric when possible', I used a linen for my summer cloak and it made it fairly reasonable for beating the sun and keeping cool :)
