Mom’s Visit From South Africa

It’s been so strange not attending sewing socials on here, and yet sewing late into the nights and early mornings. Mom arrive at least four weeks ago, trying to fit in a suddenly explosive 3 weeks at work, including a 3 day compulsory work trip away, had me anxious and fretful. I’d booked both the Dress Makers Ball and SewFizzTecared with 4 outfits to make. At 2 weeks to the Dress Makers Ball, I only started measuring mom, never before creating a toile (for me, let alone someone else), but determined I set forth. Toile made and fitted to mom and then completed Deer And Doe Magnolia dress, in the most fabulous fabric from Beyond the Pink Door Subscription March 2025 box. For myself, I had grand plans for the Gunnar Deathrage Vespertine dress (to make in 12 hours if you didn’t add sleep). I used fabric from FabWorks In Dewsbury and lace from Minerva. I omitted the godets due to time, but still ended up with the most elegant evening dress. I did make a clutch bag to match.

For SewFizzTeaCated I was very much on the same time scale, but I realised I had completed a peony dress with full adjustments in the spring and had never worn it, so my dress was decided upon. It was ShweShwe traditional fabric from South Africa (bought in 2024).

My Mom had pre-chosen the Pattern Emporium Summer Breeze Dress, so that she could wear it in the summer in Durban heat. Made of viscose (only 3m) bout from Pound-a-Fabric in 2024 too. I also made a clutch bag to match.

I’m fully worn out and only have to make a dinosaur costume for my grandson and a unicorn costume for my 2 month old granddaughter by Thursday 🤪
