Sewing Machine Recommendations

Hi All,

I have a very basic sewing machine at the moment, and would like to upgrade. I do not have an overlocker either. Is there a sewing machine that could sort of cover both? Mostly for the seam finishes. Or is this a wishful thinking? Under £1000?

I don’t have much space, it would be easier with just one machine

Thanks!

It's often difficult to answer this, as a home sewer, because you know your own machine, maybe a bit about a fellow sewist's machine, and maybe you've used one on a course.

I would often in the past, recomenmd going to a really big sewing machine shop with plenty of second hand models, asking the staff, and trying them out.

However, I am prepared to say that I used a Janome machine when at Michelle Pye's courses, and was very impressed. Those models would be well within your price range. So (just) is the Atelier 3, which has a number of stitches & features that I think might suit you., but not true overlocking.

Are you able to get somewhere to try them out? I would try contacting the UK HQ to ask to which shows they are taking which models. Or if you are handy for one of the big retailers - but always check what they have in stock.

As far as I'm aware I haven't ever come across a sewing machine and overlocker! You can use an overcast stitch on a regular sewing machine which finishes the seams (not as thoroughly as an overlocker)

Some retailers will offer deals on sewing machines + overlockers

I agree with AnnieRose try out a few machines at a retailer or show like the upcoming Stitch Festival (they will often have good deals on at these shows too).

I have always used a Janome and currently have 230DC which is a computerised model often used in sewing classes.

I do think that the 'overcast' stitches on the Janome are really very good for seam finishing, but of course they aren't as good as an overlocker.
