I'd love to know if anyone has a machine they recommend for both sewing and quilting? I haven't ever quilted anything bigger than an oven glove which my machine is fine for, but is there a machine that is good for both jobs?

Best machine for sewing AND quilting
Hi Hayley
I love my Janome 6700p great for making garments and quilts
Hi Hayley, my Bernina 570 is perfect for both.
Hi, I do both sewing clothes and quilting and there are some decisions you need to make first.
1. Budget, how much do you want to spend?
2. What size quilts do you want to quilt on a domestic machine? The throat space of a machine determines the size of folded quilt you can push through. So if smaller quilts are your thing a smaller throat space may work.
3. Stitches, what sort do you want to try, Do you want to embroider?
4. Weight and portability, do you want to take it to classes?
It is so easy to be over, or under sold a machine , so going to a good dealer and try them out, or attend a show and you may get a deal.
Its a mistake to get a very basic machine, you do need one you can grow into.
i have owned both Janome and Bernina and love them both, but it is perfectly reasonable to buy a cheaper machine that does what you want.
At the moment I have a Bernina 770QE plus and I use it for everything. But it is very considered purchase and in fact a very big birthday present to me.
Hi, i do both and I have a Janome CXL301, i find it works well, i simply roll up my fabric when quilting x
I have been quilting for a long time on my small Janome 4800. It was brilliant for piecing and for sewing clothes but where it struggled was on the quilting aspect. The throat space was 6" so it was ok for a lap quilt but anything bigger and you are beginning to struggle. I recently up graded to a Janome 6700 P and wow what a difference. The throat space is 11" so it makes a huge difference. I have quilted a quilt 96" x 96 ". There are a variety of stitches and fancy stitches and it has a straight stitch plate. I sew bags , clothes quilts and free motion embroidery and it does it all. I would definitely take into account the throat space if you are looking for a new machine and one with different stitch options for general sewing.

That sounds great, thank you so much for the advice!
