Overlocker vs Coverstitch?

I'm looking into buying my first Overlocker possibly Coverstitch. I'm wondering which one is the most preferred and why?

Also which company is best to buy from and why, I mostly work on clothing...so I'd like one of these machines, just wondering which one I'd get the most use out of. Thanks for your input and help.

I'm seeeeew excited to be a part of this community. Thank you Haley for coming up with this idea.

Hi Yolanda, You're so welcome, I'm really pleased you like it!

I can't speak about coverstitch as I've not ever used one. But I love my Janome overlocker which is a 6234XL.

Hi Yolanda, I bought a Janome 2000 cover stitch and hardly use it, it skips stitches too. On the other hand I bought a cheap overlocker a few years ago in case I didn't get on with it, use it all the time and bought a baby lock victory earlier this year. Absolutely fantastic highly recommend, you'll never look back, especially if you like sewing/wearing stretch fabrics, sweatshirt/dresses don't go near the sewing machine. Happy shopping for one. X

Hi Yolanda I would go for an overlocker, I have a cover stitch and it's a nice to have not a need to have where as I used my overlocker on pretty much every project I make to finish seams

Oh and I'd recommend the self threading ones, I have a babylock and love it but other manufactures with this feature

I would love a self-threading sewing machine!! It looks like most people would recommend an overlocker over a coverstitch Yolanda - did you find one?

I'm a overlocker newbie I have signed up for an in person class local to me. I have one that has been in its box for 4 years!

I have the Janome 6234xl overlocker and I use it a lot.  Have considered a coverstitch but I dont make enough knit garments to make it worth purchasing one.

I have a Janome 6234 xl too. I use it in every project for neatening seams on woven fabrics or for construction on knit fabrics.

I did a coverstitch course at Sew Me Something (before they closed down) to see how useful a machine would be. It is really good for hems, cuffs and neckline on knit fabrics.

I did buy a coverstitch machine, but bought a Juki as it doesn't skip stitches like the Janome.  I like having separate machines.

Definitely overlocker - you'll wonder how you sewed without one

coverstitch is a nice to have but they're notorious for needing a fair bit of tweaking / bedding in before they're happy and although I have one ( brother cv3550 ) I often just use maraflex thread in my sewing machine and hem away with a std straight stitch

Several years ago my kids bought me a brother serger. It was a good starter one. I was able to learn on it. I used it a lot and decided to upgrade. So, I bought myself a Babylock last year. I got an air threader and really like it. It was a good investment. I am really happy that I have my serger(s).

I've got both and agree, the cover stitch machine is not a necessity... I have a love/hate relationship with mine and unfortunately have the Janome. It skips stitches occasionally, like others have mentioned. I've always used Bernina for my sewing machines, and I love my Bernina overlocker. I'd recommend getting an overlocker with a differential feed
