How Long Does Fabric Sit In Your Stash?

Sometimes I buy fabrics without a real plan, and often forget about them. I've just made a Donny shirt using fabric which has been in my stash since June 2010.

Every fabric gets its chance to shine.

Hooray for stash shopping!! Every fabric definitely does get its moment in the spotlight! I have a couple of fabrics that have been in the stash nearly 10 years!

Many many years ago (we're talking 90s here) my husband went to an auction (without me) and proudly told me he had successfully bid on an ex fabric shop stock clearance..... There was so much fabric we actually had a market stall for a while! All this to say I still have some of that fabric.

From my own purchases I have some fabric that is possibly 20 years old. I'm trying to sew from my stock and use it up but there is so much prettiness about that I get tempted and add to my personal resource centre instead.

That's my weakness - I have plenty of fabric, but there is always something which tempts me.

Oh my goodness Glenda, no wonder you have such a big resource centre!! Were you excited or did you think he'd gone mad?

I think I was more overwhelmed than excited. I'm still using the rolls of interfacing and wadding so that's good. A few auctions later he came back with an estate car full of leather hides - poor quality but useful.

My collection of fabrics is really only a year old but I have already called a halt on buying (apart from the BYTPD monthly box - for the dopamine hit you understand) until I get on with the making.

BTPD doesn’t count 😜 I love mine. I need to be no buy, but I’m focusing on low buy. Fabric in my stash goes back to when I started sewing in 2021 and I have too much 😳

Its beautiful shirt. Well done.

For me it depends. I have fabric in my stash that was made in '70, it was passed to me by a family member. Most fabrics are in my stash either very short or very long. I do have a big stash

I have some fabric that’s 10 years old but have been determinedly shopping my stash for 4 months. Sadly, I saw double gauze on pound fabrics for £2.50/m yesterday and bought some and will have to squeeze it in when it comes!

It looks great (and it makes me feel a little better about some of my long term stash fabrics 😉)

100% as long as it needs to. If I run out of room I simply stop building inventory at random, though I will still pick up the odd specific fabric I need for XYZ project as work arises. I have fabric that I bought for special projects for people that haven't been in my life for years - it all gets called into service eventually.
