Best Fabrics For Dressmaking - What Do You Recommend?

My absolute favourite fabric for dresses that are super wearable is a viscose poplin - it's easier to work with than a lot of other types of viscose that are quite fine but still has some fluidity meaning you get a dress that is comfortable to wear.
I have a YouTube video with tips on sewing with viscose

It's a great subject to discuss ! I've used ponte for a cardigan, and a dress would be nice I think, it's both comfortable and elegant. But too hot for summer time probably...
Viscose poplin sounds interesting !

Ponte Roma is a great fabric for beginners who want to start sewing with jersey as it's super stable and easy to work with. But yes better for cooler weather

My favourite is cotton lawn which is more stable to sew with than viscose, however, it doesn't drape as much as a viscose does so you really need to think about how you want the finished garment to look.

Yes, that's such a great point. I love cotton lawn too, but prefer wearing viscose or linen blends for the drape and fluidity
Hi Jenny-sews64, I have to agree with you cotton lawn is the best. I love the feel of it whilst sewing and then even better the wearing. Have you made anything with it lately? As part of #memademay I made the Fittleworth blouse from the Sussex Seamstress and also the Strata Too from French Navy both in cotton lawn. Both worked well in terms of construction & fit.

Hi Sophalina, the last thing I sewed was a Zoe dress by Emporia patterns in a Lady McElroy cotton lawn from a Sew Hayley Jane luxury box from a few years ago. The fabric was brilliant for the dress but the instructions weren't so good and it is a little too roomy.
