I'm getting started on my Sanda Jacket from Merchant and Mills. The hip-length jacket view has front patch pockets whereas the knee-length coat view has inseam pockets. I want all the pockets! Does anyone have advice for me to add the coat view inseam pockets to the jacket pattern? The jacket will be a brushed wool tweed with silk lining.
Sanda Jacket Inseam Pockets
Oooh sounds lovely!!
There isn't a lot of room for patch pockets on the cropped jacket, you'd need to have the opening quite high up to avoid the base of the pocket from peeking out below the hem. It's definitely doable though - lay the pocket paper piece on the jacket piece at the side seams where you want it to be and mark with notches the top and bottom of the opening. Keep in mind the coat will be shorter once you have sewn the hem.
This is beautiful!
My first thought is that adding in-seam to a hip length might be awkward.
Although I don't know this particular pattern, I think that all you would have to do is move the seam pocket markings up to where you want them - but you may have to shorten the pocket. The problem is that the 'drag' of in-seam pockets may leave you very little room.
Although the bottom picture shows a model with a slightly longer hip length, I think that an inseam pocket would end up almost under your arm and be uncomfortable and inaccessible! Also a short inseam pocket oftne means that you end up with it almost horizontal and stuff drops out.
Fortunately you can try with a bit of scrap as you'd only need to rip it out and sew up the seam.
I am a huge fan of pockets and add them to almost everything. With this pattern, if I wanted a 'safe' pocket I would add one to the lining, or add a small one inside the main patch pocket.
Good luck, and I would love to see what you come up with.
Thanks you two! This gives me a few things to think through. The awkward location is a great point. I find I just need a place to put my hands and patch pockets are a whole different kind of awkward for that. Ha! Maybe I'll consider lengthening the jacket a smidge. Or maybe I'll just go with the patch pockets and see what I think. My fabric, although really nice, was thrifted, so I can afford to make this a wearable toile. TBC...
Well, if you want somewhere to put your hands, and are willing to play around a bit, I would try repositioning the pockets slightly, and put a slant on them on the outer side, so you can stuff your hands in them. Again, easy to try with a bit of scrap.
