Are there any blouse patterns out there suitable for broderie anglaise? I have 2m and would like a top/blouse in it. I’m a size 14-16 and, totally inspired by Hayley’s recent tummy friendly video, I’m wondering if the TATB Nell peplum blouse would work in broderie anglaise? Any ideas?
Broderie Anglaise
This is a lovely pattern and I see why it would look good in broderie anglaise. However, I want to sound a word of caution. In my experience, the stitching on the fabric means that it doesn't always drape or gather well, and needs a simple pattern.
I'd suggest a few gathering stitches on the fabric and hang it on your model or over a chair to see how it seems, before you cut it.
Hope it does work well for you!
Thank you, that’s a very good idea and I might give that a try.
Ooh that would be beautiful, however I agree with AnnieRose I don’t think it will gather well. There is an option to make the blouse without the peplum which would be really nice and because it isn’t fitted it would drape from your bust.
Thanks Hayley. I think I’ll try gathering a bit and see how it behaves, as AnnieRose suggested.
This is a really helpful thread as I have some broderie anglais that I am wanting to sew up this summer and have been wondering what to make. I think I’ll go for the Tammy Handmade Faye blouse. I’m going to line the bodice with a cotton lawn and because I can get it on over my head, I’m just going to stitch the buttons straight through the plackets and skip the button holes!
That is a really nice pattern. I haven't come across Tammy Hand Made before. I am wary of blouses, finding they don't always suit me. I head for woven tops (I drafted one on a Michelle Pye course) and shirts. But I think I'll give this one a go - thanks!
I don’t know that pattern but will look it up. Sounds like a great idea with the burrows!
Buttons not burrows🙄
Last year I made beautiful set using broderie anglaise in cobalt blue
Used New Look 6217 and Simplicity 1887
Top is finishing at high hip and skirt had a bit of gathering at the back and flat front (and big pockets)
i cut front and back of the top using scalloped edge instead of hem and i self drafted cuffs (basically the same width as a grow on sleeve and attached using 5/8 of seam allowance.
I don't have a pic of me on my phone, but there is pinned reel on my Insta with this set.
I feel like a million bucks in this set.
For wearing as a set I tuck in top, when I wore it with wide leg jeans I did partial tuck at front and when I wore it with black wide leg trousers I wore it untucked.
Its simple but it allows for verisility.
Skirt is lined with light weight cotton
the pattern requires interfering on a front of the waistband, so I cut out with tiny embroidery scissors all the holes so interfering is not visible (I know I am crazy)
Managed to take print screen of my outfit.
Wowzers, this looks amazing and you look fab in it! Top marks for snipping away all the interfacing!
Thanks :)
Spectacular colour!
Hi Agata, I remember your blue outfit very well. It appeared in the pics of the SoSew social last year, I think. It was lovely and it’s the same fabric I have! I also have that pattern too but I’d like to have three-quarter length sleeves on this one.
Following on from what AnnieRose and Hayley said about gathering this fabric, I think I’ll go with something much simpler and am considering New Look 6434 if I can get my hands on one🤞
That’s love Agatha. What about the Bakerloo Blouse, or one of my favourites, the Ginny Top, by Elle Stitch?
I don’t know the Ginny top but will look it up. Thank you for the suggestion.
