“Multitasking” When Sewing…

Does anyone else watch TV/film or listen to something while sewing?

Usually I will listen to an audiobook or podcast.

Yesterday, I had a day of sewing and watched the Winter Olympics (the only time I actually watch sport! 🤪)

I wondered what people like to watch or listen to (or even sew in silence)?

Here’s a couple of work in progress photos. I’m making a Sew Over It Ava skirt.

I used to listen to music or the radio. However, I now find that I really need all my concentration on sewing, so mostly in silence. I might put something on if I have a bit of hand sewing, or something very basic, but am worried about mking mistakes. And that is why I no longer know what is happening in Ambridge!

Love this question Mel - I like listening to audio books or podcasts but have to use headphones to hear over the sound of the sewing machine. I do have to pause it if I need to concentrate on reading certain instructions though!

Sometimes I'll put YouTube on, on a series that Andy isn't interested in watching but I get easily distracted!!

I have a whole system that provides entertainment but not much distraction.

For cutting and pattern work (very focused) I listen to music.

For everything else at my table I watch familiar shows or movies. Currently I'm watching Volume 3 of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection.

My sewing machine faces the wall so I'll sometimes watch YouTube videos on my tablet if I'll be there a while. I did this recently with a patchwork quilt. I have a box of strips and will take that box to the machine and stitch them until the end of my YouTube watching.

Podcasts and audiobooks for me. I can relate a finished project to what I was listening to when I made it. My new shirt is Henry VIII as I was listening to Wolf Hall!

I love how you can do that. It’s so fun to be able to say that.

Ah I love that!! I totally get what you mean as well. Same goes for music - I have some really strong attachments to particular bands I was listening to loads as a teenager reading Harry Potter!!

I love watching YouTube or listening to audio books if I'm sewing up something simple that I've made before but if I need to concentrate and read instructions I'll just have the music on in the background. I do get distracted really easily 🤣🤣
