And a bonus question - folded or rolled?

How do you store your fabric?

Rolled definitely
I hadn't thought about rolling but that's probably a very good idea. I have had some creases and fabric that's been stored in a box for a while that I haven't been able to get rid of
Ive also found that I can see what I have better, if its all folded and stacked up, its harder to see what's what
Especially because I find things get pushed to the back and then they are out of sight!
A bit of everything, some in boxes, some on open shelves, some in cupboard and some on storage bags. Usually folded
Haha, love that! Do it all!
Small house, big stash = need to bring creative ;)
Kallax unit in cubed boxes, very neatly folded around board and pinned so I can pulled out and replace easily. However, really good thought about rolling v folding - may have to rethink as the creasing is a pain.
Looks like another re-org will be taking place 😉
Oh but I love how tidy that sounds!!
Mine is mostly rolled, but some folded in three drawers of a large Ikea Malm 6 drawer unit. I have an Ikea 4x4 Kallax on top of the drawers to make afake dresser and I keep my sewing machines in the cubby holes of the Kallax. I have a new craft room so am very excited!
Oh wow this looks so good! I love how the cupboard doors have doubled up as a peg board - I haven't seen that before!!
I bought them a few years ago from IKEA in preparation for my craft room. I don't think they sell them anymore.
Beautifully organised!
That looks perfect!
Storage boxes in the Kallax unit, mostly rolled but thicker fabrics are folded.
God bless that Kallax!
Indeed!
I have a large fabric resource centre (sounds better than stash!) and some is rolled, some is folded, some is stuffed, some is in an untidy heap that once was stacked but decomposed as lower layers were excavated etc. I have an accessible loft area that has a flat surface like a table so fabric is on that and under it, I also have storage boxes where fabric is (theoretically) stored vertically and some plastic bags where offcuts/remnants were placed to 'deal with later'. I also have my 'current projects' pile that started off all neat and tidy but now is just a sloping mass of doom.
And I never have the right fabric for what I have in mind so buy more........
Oh Glenda I love the "fabric resource centre" that does sounds so much better!
I love 'fabric resource centre'. Don't get me started on remnants! I have a load that I was going to 'deal with later' and is now in two large plastic bags that I have no idea what to do with. I had grand ideas to use bits for colour blocking, or pocket linings, or smaller items, but it is never going to happen, I'm sure. Hey ho!
My fabrics are stored in an old cupboard which was in my grand's parents bedroom. When my grandmother was young, she worked as a seamstress in a sewing workshop. It's like she's here with me in my sewing space.
Well this is just so lovely!! How special
I store mibe in a variety of places - shelves, cupboards, boxes - wherever i can find space! I fold my fabybut actually rolly sounds much more sensible!
Haha, fabric everywhere!!
Mostly folded in boxes. Each box is numbered and I make a note of each fabric and it's location in my Stash Hub app.
That's very impressive 👍🏻 I have fabric in crates, but it's nowhere near as well-organised as yours. Brilliant!
This is very impressive fabric storage Wendy!! I am very jealous
Wow, I'm in awe of your organisation!
Oh I have storage envy, that looks impressive.
After all this talk of storage I was inspired to start tidying up my scraps/remnants, got through one bagful, 3 more to go plus a crate full, I’d rather be sewing but feel better having at least achieved a little bit of fabric spring cleaning!
When I need inspiration I have a good tidy up and when I see a fabric or pattern it gives me a push.
Yeah for you. I wish I was better at using Stash Hub. I actually don't have much of a stash right now. I'm using it up quickly.
I use Stash Hub for most of my sewing. I have listed all my fabrics, patterns, notions and projects. It took a few months to enter everything, but now I can see what I've got easily. I'm still adding my grandmother's button collection though.
I have a cedar lined chest of drawers that I store my quilting fabric by color. It is folded and stood up so I can see all of it. My dressmaking fabric is folded and in bins and put on a shelf.
My quilting fabric is also inboxes, but I haven't got a big stash (yet?) If I'm making a quilt I buy what I need and use the leftovers in other projects.
I now have storage envy!!! If I lived somewhere that had easy access to stores or online shopping I would have a lot more fabric but, as it is, mine is all in one drawer, folded over card and each piece in its own clear plastic bag. Then I have a storage box with scraps and old sheets for muslins.
That sounds really well organised!! If it works for you that's perfect. I don't have a huge stash at all. Where in the world are you?
I’m a UK expat living in Cyprus, Mediterranean area. We have one small local store which is mainly wedding fabrics, although they do stock really nice linen but expensive. My other option is an hour’s drive away which is ok, quality is not always brilliant though. To order online is expensive by the time import fees are paid so most of my fabric I purchase when I visit the UK, usually a couple of times a year.
Oh but what a payoff though!! I think I'd only shop a couple of times a year in order to live in Cyprus!
I've only been sewing clothes 'properly' since the beginning of April last year. It has astonished me how fabric accumulates! I find myself now slightly overwhelmed by the stuff.
I am neurodivergent and 'out of sight out of mind' is a big issue for me. Even if I catalogued the stuff I bought, I wouldn't then check the catalogue, so rolled and stacked on open shelves - one for knits, one for wovens and 2 for the bulky coatings and fleece type things - is my best option. I now also have a pile of 'I know what I am going to use this for' fabrics and a colourful fabric rack, formerly known as a stair banister rail, which houses the laundered and ironed fabric that is waiting it's turn.
All that's needed is a little more time to sew!
I agree I like to see what fabric I have in my stash otherwise I think it would be too easy to forget what you have - I'm not a very well organised person in the respect that I don't tend to catalogue what I've got!!
