Office Capsule Wardrobe

New project 😁

I want to create a capsule wardrobe for work. I work in an office and I would like a collection to wear so that I feel well dressed and professional and maybe take some of the confidence I seem to have when sewing into work.

I took a list of items to buy fabric for to the stitch festival and came away with most of what I needed and have ordered online what I couldn’t find, which was only some brown cotton canvas and a cute animal print to use as a lining for one of the jackets.

My plan is to make 5 shirts/blouses, 2 or 3 jackets and 2 pairs of trousers. And with the latest bag makers box being perfect for this project, a bag as well.

So a big project and one I have been looking forward to getting into. I just need to choose which garment to start with.

Love this idea, I like your patterns and fabric, good matching.

I'll be following to see how you get on,

I made a cross body bag with faux leather very similar to yours, it came out really well.

Ive also made two Laon shirts, lovely pattern

Great idea and looks like a lot of fun. Are the zipper pulls for the trousers?

Thank you, no the zipper pulls in the picture will be for a bag as they were in the bag makers box x

Garment No. 1 - Avid Seamstress Blazer

I did struggle with the instructions and was quite pleased I had already made a coat and could call on my experience with that as I was left very confused with this at times, probably due to my overall inexperience.

I did manage it though and am very pleased with it. I did add a wider hem on the bottom as I ended up with a curl due to the lining being too tight so a wider hem fixed that and shorted it slightly which works with my shorter body.

Absolutely incredible job!! How did you get on with the seam allowances? You said in the social that there were different seam allowances, but did it all make sense in the end?

I did okay on the seam allowances on the main body. The collar was a head scratching moment as I couldn’t understand the instructions and had to unpick it all and redo it in a way I understood but by default I think the seam allowances worked out about right ish.

That's great, really pleased it worked out

Were the seam allowances smaller at the collar? This has caught me by surprise a few times but it really is easier to put in with a smaller allowance.

Yes but also at other parts, there are multiple seam allowances on each pattern piece.

I tried to make a jacket with lining that curled at the bottom, but I had no idea what I'd done wrong or how to fix it. So a wider hem is the answer?

I’m not sure it I did the right thing but it did work. It appeared like the lining was too tight so was pulling on the outer fabric making it curl. By folding up the hem a bit more, the lining wasn’t as tight so it wasn’t pulling.

That makes total sense, and if it solved the problem it must be right!

That looks gorgeous Adele! Love all the details on this. What is the fabric?

The fabric is a 100% linen I bought from Sew Different at the Stitch Festival. I fell in love with the print on it.

First pair of trousers and the gold Atelia June Hanna blouse (hacked to cuff the sleeves and really big hem to shorten as it will be worn tucked in.

The blouse was a nightmare to start with as I found the viscose fabric really challenging but got used to it

The trousers came together nicely and are from my own block.

Both of these look so good, considering you found the viscose tricky to work with it has turned out beautiful!

And Twig and Tale Breeze shirt No2. I haven’t done as good of a job with this one, however it still looks okay. It doesn’t fit as well either, which is interesting so must be down to the type of fabric. Hopefully it’ll stretch a bit with wear.

That's a shame this one doesn't fit as right - I love the scallop detail on the hem though!

Well it looks lovely even if you feel you haven't 'done as good of a job' on it!! Like Hayley, I love the use of the scalloped edges. You are cracking through this plan of yours!!

So pleased to get the Notches Jenna Jacket finished in tonight’s social 🤩.

I picked this tapestry fabric up at the Stitch Festival from Lili Fabrics. I fancied having a go using tapestry fabric as it was a bit different and I fell in love with the multicoloured leaf print.

The jacket came together okay, I did have to stop and think a couple of times but there is a video tutorial so that solved the head scratching moment. Overall it wasn’t too difficult to see up.

I originally had planned to add a lining (not part of the pattern) but decided against it to have a light weight summer jacket. I’ve overlocked everything so that’s all okay on the inside.

I’ve now completed the Itch to Stitch Laon Shirt in this lovely teal polka dot. I’ve used snap fasteners in place of the buttons.

Really nice to sew up, great instructions as always with Itch to Stitch.

Love it. I don't have a good history with princess seams! Do you prefer them to regular darts?

Adele's avatar
Adele Community Member

I really like princess seams, I first did them on the Lagan coat and think they look really nice. I didn't finish the inside of them as well as I could have done with the shirt though so something to work on. This one has fish eye darts in the back, which was new to me.

I get on very well with princess seams, but I think it depends very much on the original drafting. This is my favourite shirt: https://www.cashmerette.com/products/harrison-shirt-pdf-pattern.

I think that altering princess seams is probably quite difficult, but Jenny drafts by cup sizes, and I didn't need to alter it at all.

Final garments:

2 more Itch to Stitch Laon shirts. This pattern really works for me so sticking with it. I did adjust the hem to straighten it as I’m not that keen on the really curved hem.

I did have a play with the 2 fabrics, making these at the same time and using the opposite fabric as contrast for the collar stands, under collar and inside cuffs, which was fun to do.

How long did it take you to photograph all of these?

Thank you, I’m really pleased with them.

Speed photography as I was using our communal stairwell as it had good light. I was a bit hot and bothered by the end of it but managed to get them all done without any of my neighbours coming out and catching me in a state of undress 🤣
