Capsule Wardrobe Part 1

Hi all! I am planning my capsule wardrobe now my newly refurbished craftroom is almost up and running.

I am going to start with leisure wear. I enjoy swimming and Tai Chi so my first project is a bag. I have cut out and started the Sew Over It City Set bag and card wallet from a navy blue canvas that was part of a Guthrie and Ghani kit a while back. My first attempt at a zipped welt pocket was a bit of a disaster but as it will ne inside the bag, I am not too worried.

My plan is to centre my kit around blues. I am tossing up between the Lane Pants from Sydney Graham or the Chanterelle pants from Sew Liberated. I have a mid blue raime fabric for those .I hate anything too clingy when I have been for a swim, so either of those would be fine. I am going to do a Toaster sweater in a pale blue polar fleece for early morning swims and Tai Chi and a navy set of Sew Liberated Lomestone leggings and the top. The leggings will do for Tai Chi and the top can be a bra top to wear home after a swim (I hate trying to wrestle with a bra) I also have a blue bundle of tee shirt weight jersey from Lamazi fabric for some co-ordinated simpe tee- shirts.

All in all I hope to create a capsule leisure set that I can mix and match for the seasons and wear for other occasions too. Well that is the plan!!

Ooh another capsule wardrobe and yours is going to be very different to my office one so it’s going to be great following yours while I’m doing mine 😊

That capsule wardrobe sounds a good plan to fit your lifestyle. I like the sound of it.

This all sounds absolutely fantastic! I have made the Chanterelle pants, both wide and barrel leg and love them both. I haven't made the Lane pants but I know they have been very popular, although a lot of people have said they come up very big.

Looking forward to following along

Outer body of my City Bag partly done. Zip will go in tomorrow and then the barrel ends and the lining over the next few days. I am aiming to finish it by Sunday.

My fleece for the Toaster Sweater and my Swedish tracing paper have arrived so I can crack on with tracing off my pattern and start the Toaster next week.

Very inspiring! Loving the way you are giving so much thought to what works for you rather than just chasing patterns and fabric. Looking forward to seeing more photos!!

A slight hiatus as I have had a flu bug and now a sinus headache. The Lane Pants pattern is printed and cut out and the fabric is prewashing as we speak. I have made the Limestone Top from some cheap lycra from Minerva but it is rather thin with little support. I also had to go down a fair few sizes. I will re do it and then get some decent fabric. Luckily it onlybtakes half a metre. I aim to finish my bag tomorrow when I am headache free.

Oh sorry to hear you've not been well, hope the headache gets better soon and you can enjoy getting the Lane pants sewn up.

Lane Pants all finished. The photo isn’t the best, but I was excited to upload it! The fabric is a dark really lovely quality cotton chambray from Guthrie and Ghani. I made a size 16 based on my hips and as I am only 5ft small I took off 3 inches from the bottom of the pattern as it looked quite straight below the knee and there was no obvious shortening line. The fit is really good and they are very comfy and look quite smart. I am just not sure if they are flattering on a 60 year old Hobbit. They will be perfect for wearing to swimming though.

These look fantastic! And the common consensus these days is who cares about "flattering" - if you're comfortable and feel good in them then that is all that matters! These will be so comfortable as the weather warms up

First tee shirt made in an old jersey from my stash, bought before I had my colour analysis done and therefore not my colour, but perfectly good as a gardening tee shirt! I made the TATB Agnes tee. I have made it before when I was a couple of stone heavier so this time I chose the Tilly size 8. I am glad I did a trial run. I have the original pattern bought before she was more size inclusive and the largest size is a tad too snug across the tummy and hips. I will need to do a narrow shoulder adjustment too. I sewed it up quickly on my overlocker and messed up the neck band by not dividing it into quarters. It was only my second tee and I used the shoulder seems as my quarter points!!! Therefore the front is tight and the back neck band is gapping. but never mind the garden won’t notice. I tried a twin needle on the neck but didn’t have a stretch one, so I just used the one I had as this was only a wearable muslin. I am impressed with the finish it gives to the neck. Just the hems to finish then I will do some pattern adjustments before cutting in to my ‘real’ material.

This looks beautifully sewn! Ah yes, that is a common mistake to think of the shoulder seams as the quarter points. But for a first t-shirt I still think that neckband looks pretty spot on!

Tee shirt no. 2. This time an Itch to Stitch Kashi tee which is a much more boxy fit. I was tight on fabric so only did the cropped version. The bust width is good, with enough positive ease but the neck band pattern piece was too big. I sorted out my 4 quarter points but it is just too loose when I wear it. I also need to do about one inch narrow shoulder adjustment. Again this was bargain fabric and although it is not a great success I will wear it around the house and garden as I do like the print. The cropped look is slightly too cropped for my 5ft height but would go well with the high waisted Lane Pants.

On the subject of the Lane Pants, I really love them. They are so comfy and look very smart despite me making them for wearing too and from the gym. I have decided to keep them as more ‘going out’ trousers.

Next quest after pre washing a load of fabric is to do another Kashi tee, longer length and adjust the neck band pattern piece. I also want some more wide length pants but not as wide as the Lane Pants. I have the Calder Pants pattern from Cashmerette. I wish companies would tell you the finished width of the trousers leg! I also need to get going on my Sew Liberated Arenites!
