Shearing is a really lovely detail that adds some shaping to your garments. It is multiple rows of stitches using shirring elastic in the bobbin that pulls the fabric in and it usually reduces the width of your fabric by half, but obviously then stretches and moves with your body.
Typically, you'd find it on dresses either across the bust or just the waist, or you might find it on sleeve or trouser cuffs as well and it's best done in a fabric that has a little bit of drape, slightly lighter weight fabric like a viscose or even a cotton lawn or cotton poplin works really well as well.
