A simple method of finishing your raw edges is with bias binding. This is called a bias bound seam finish you can also get a Hong Kong seam finish which is a slightly more in-depth version this works really well for items that have exposed seams such as unlined jackets and gives a really beautiful decorative finish.

So I've got my fabric here the seam has been pressed open already and I have a length of bias binding I'm gonna flip this piece of fabric out of the way so that I just have this one exposed raw edge here and take my bias binding and then I am literally just going to wrap it round so we've got the decorative edge of the bias binding on the underside.

Line up the raw edge with the center of the bias binding and then wrap the bias binding around that raw edge. Now you can do this and then pin in place all the way down. I actually find that really fiddly and I prefer to sew a little bit readjust the seam and then sew a little bit more. I do that all the way along.

So all we're going to do now is top stitch along this folded edge of the bias binding closer to the center of the seam line. Pop that under your machine making sure all the way down that the bias binding is hugging and wrapping all the way around that raw edge.

Now it depends how big your bias binding is as to where you are going to top stitch. This is a shop bought bias binding, but you could make your own bias binding and they all come in different widths so I'm not going to tell you what width to sew the top stitching because it will very much depend on your choice of bias binding. And there you go that's how you finish your raw edges of your seam allowance with bias binding.
