Ive just sorted my sewing room out & have sooo much fabric in my stash, enough for about 20 new garments this year! I will try not to buy anymore fabric this year! Anybody else have too much fabric (is there such a thing 😂) and not enough time 🤷🏻♀️
Sooo much fabric!
I decided to clean my sewing room out and I must admit I'm shocked at how much fabric I have. As I went through my stash I realised that I have quite a lot of fabric that I no longer love. I have made a promise to myself that apart from my SHJ subscription box I'm not buying any more fabric in 2025.
I cleared my room prior to Christmas too, and was eually shocked.
I realised last year that I don't actually like having a fabric stash, there's too much guilt involved. I'm on a mission to use as much as I can so won't be buying any more for the foreseeable, other than 1. fabric for a coat class I'm booked onto in late January and 2. my SHJ subscription box.
I have my daughter here at the moment, looking after her puppy (he moved in with us unexpectedly in November, part of the reason my sewing has taken a back seat). So far I've managed two tops, a pair of pj's and two pinafore dresses, so I've made a fairt dent!
I'm glad that this is not only a me problem 🤣. I do this with pattens too... I subscribed to a few pattern boxes hoping it would stop the urge to purchase fabric but alas it did not so I'm going to have to implement sother measures - any ideas welcome!
Absolutely. Recently moved house, and the fabric collection is bigger than I realised!
I'm making an effort to sew what I have at least for the time being.
I learnt to sew at school. I'm now 60. So I have accumulated a huge stash of fabric over the last 48 years. I organise my stash, so I know what I have. I have exactly 104 pieces of fabric and I've realised that I no longer love and will not use a fair amount of this fabric. But I'm sure others would appreciate and use it. What is the best way to de-stash? Thanks
My fabric stash is insanely huge - good in some ways, bad in other ways.
2025 plan is not to buy more fabric and have asked family and friends not to send me fabric. Only shopping from my stash in 2025.
I emptied 5 storage bins of fleece, all is bagged up for donation pickup.
Yes. I've had too much for two years. I have about 40 boxes (ikea square ones) cos I went mad for a while. I even set up a page to sell my stuff to try and make space. I can't do any sewing with it, no head space. I'm going to tidy the rooms it's all in and try and finish a project or two I have on the go. Then make something for my mother in law. I want to try and make myself something but I'm really big and I don't see the point. I would consider myself a beginner, I've made about 20 things in total in 2 years, with different degree of success. Need to get my head down.
There are lots of destash pages. Just put destash in the group search section on Facebook. I started one about a year and a half ago you are welcome to join. Our fabrics - de-stash and re-stash. But there are plenty of options. Some specialise in fabric types eg stretch and non stretch.
Good luck!
A lot of people set up detach accounts for this purpose on instagram.
People also sell it on Vinted.
Ahhh yes I am also a fabric collector 😂
A pattern collector and haberdashery collector too!
These are all hobbies in their own right!
Seriously it is crazy how quickly you can build up a stash.
I have been a bit slack in using my SHJ fabrics lately!
So my goal is to make at least 6 SHJ fabrics made up by the end of February, more if possible!
I love having a stash, but I have limited space as my sewing area is half of the living room 😂
104 over 48 years doesn't sound too bad - about 2 pieces a year!
One of our future plans here is to create a space for fabric swapping/stash selling... it won't be for a little while yet but it is in our plans.
Hi Ruth, I can totally understand how too much fabric can be a bit overwhelming - like you can't see the wood for the trees! I'm sad to see you don't see the point in making things for yourself (unless I misunderstood) - you deserve to put the skills and talent you've acquired towards yourself and making yourself lovely things.
Ooh great idea Hayley.
I moved house in August and it meant I had to face up to my fabric stash and all the different places I stored it! It was quite therapeutic going through my stash and deciding whether to keep or get rid of each piece. Overall I think I parted with about a third of my stash. I passed it on to a local re-use and re-purpose charity (I couldn't face the faff of trying to destash it and pack the rest of my house up at the same time).
I still have quite a large stash and I may go through it again at some point but I'm happy with what is there and don't put pressure on myself to use or not use it. It also helped me work out what fabrics I prefer to sew with!
My name is Amanda and I'm a fabric and pattern hoarder 😂 Top of my list for this year is to sort my stash of fabrics that I have no idea what to do with, it's overwhelming and I just don't know where to start, I promised myself I wouldn't buy any more this year then a local sewing class shop that also sold fabric had an instagram live sale as they are no longer selling fabric so I've ended up with another random 6 pieces of fabric in various lengths which I've no plans for, massive fail but I can't resist a bargain! Glad to hear I'm not alone, I buy fabric and patterns with no clue what I'm going to do with them, I need some inspiration and direction, hopefully I'll pick up some tips and ideas on here.
