Vintage sewing machine

I'm still using my 70's Frister and Rossman machine my mother bought me and it's doing well. I don't have a walking foot and would like to try quilting. It seems like an essential tool but I remember doing a quilted item for my baby son in the 90's without one! Any ideas? Are lots of pins and slow long stitches okay? Were walking feet invented back in the 20th century?

So I haven't done a lot of quilting, but any that I have done I do find that the fabric wants to shift a little and I end up with little tucks where the stitching lines intersect. So if I was planning to do more or a bigger project I would probably get a walking foot.

However I reckon you should definitely try a little quilting practice and see how your machine does - it might work completely fine!
