What To Do With Fabric Scraps

We all often end up with a pile or bag of fabric scraps and offcuts that we say we will do something with... and then never do. So let's get some ideas going.

What do you do with leftover fabric scraps?

Here are some of my ideas, but add to the list

Larger scraps - make tote bags. I did this for Christmas and made tote bags from all the 50cm left over pieces of fabric - cottons, chambrays, canvas for outer, viscose and cottons for the linings

Use as filler for floor poufs like the one at Closet Core -https://blog.closetcorepatterns.com/fabric-floor-pouf-free-sewing-pattern/

Pocket bags, facings, inside of collars and cuffs

My son lives in a rented flat with lots of draughts so I made long 'sausages' to use as draught excluders. Stuffed full of off cuts of course.

I use mine for pocket linings, patchwork or appliqué in machine embroidery blocks.

I’m saving all mine because one day I will make a pouffe and use them for stuffing.

This is what I’m doing, but that day never seems to arrive!

I’ve recently gone through a massive collection of scraps that aren’t big enough to make a garment, I’ve kept one large plastic box full of pieces I could potentially use for bag linings, pockets etc. but the rest is going to my grandsons school though I’m a bit worried that when they see the 2 big bags they might not want it all 😂

I’ve made the closet core pouffe before and filled it with scraps - a fun project, it’s very heavy and lives in the summer house. Not sure I have the need for another.

I felt like I was drowning in dressmaking scraps and needed to be brutal as it was weighing me down. I already have a massive patchwork fabric collection with patchwork scraps so really couldn’t cope with dressmaking scraps too.

It does get to that point where it all gets a bit too much doesn't it? I have to be quite brutal sometimes too, if I can I'll donate it to schools, pre-schools or adult day service centres. Or we have a scrap store that takes donations too.

Sometimes though, I hate to admit it but some does go in the bin. Otherwise it really does become too much

One of my obsessions! I do all the above. Until recently I made rag rugs - however, my arthritic hands now find the hooking too painful.

use some fabric to make a feature on a garment, such as collar or cuffs

patch together to make aprons or gardening smocks

also knickers (I love my 'designer' knickers!)

make lavender bags (I have a lavender hedge and dry my own - I fund raise for charity with a few friends)

make all sorts of scarves - I use knits to make neck warmers - and I have made some lovely 'twist' cowl type scarves with beautiful fabrics. These have sold well at charity fund raisers, though I have to tell people that they are 'one-offs'!

gift bags - all sorts of sizes - I add a note 're-use or pass on'

gift wrapping

with appropriate fabric:

make-up remover / cosmetic pads

spectacle polishing scraps

hankies

tops to put on marmalade which I gift (I don't really make any other jams or chutneys)

I pass on knit fabric to a friend who cuts it into strips to crochet cushon covers. I'm thinking of trying this myself now I can't rag rug.

I know a lot of places offer free patterns. My own favourite is The Cloth House - my latest is their 'bunny bag'.

I also found myself wanting Sewing with Scraps. Seems a bit odd to pay quite a lot for something like that, but in the end I decided I could use my Fold Line points. It is lovely to read, and I shall do something from it, as soon as I have finished my current project!

All of these make lovely gifts for friends who don't sew (sadly, for some reason, most of mine)

This is such a great list!! I have eyed up the Sewing with Scraps book too, it looks really good, although I'm not sure I would ever really wear any of the projects. So for me it's definitely smaller projects, pocket/collar/cuff linings and bags!

Love this list. I thought I would make a yoga bolster also stuffed with the bits that I currently put in the bin (overlocker cuttings etc). And a lavender bag on every hanger!

Some wonderful ideas here AnnieRose. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us!! It is quite shocking to me how quickly fabric - stash and the resulting scraps - proliferates in my little house and I'm inspired by your list!

All depends on the fabric and size

Knits - I make headbands, keep for applique or colourblocking or clothes for friends kids

Cottons - I recently went through most of my remnants to cut out triangles for bunting project for my village.

All too small for that will be cut into 4.5"sq, 2.5" square or left for adding to paper straps for future quilting projects.

I've been haunted by your bunting project Agata. Did you finish calculating how much thread it would take? You really are a star ⭐

I've tried to meditate for years (and years) and have been wondering about one of those squished pouffe type cushions you can buy to encourage correct posture.... I might have a go at making one of those with scraps but I'll have to make sure it isn't lumpy! I get distracted enough when trying to achieve a zen state 🤣
