Setting In Sleeves

Well, I know that the last actual dress I made was 16 years ago (son's wedding) as my usual look is trousers / leggings and tunic / shirt, whether it's silky & dressy or very casual. But I got very tempted by this lovely dress from Helen's Closet (a maker I found on here - thank you!) https://helensclosetpatterns.com/collections/dresses/products/holmes-dress

I hate setting in sleeves! I have done it on the Harrison shirt (Cashmerette, it has princess seams) and otherwise I stay away! I usually attach the sleeve then sew sleeve & side seam all together, Especially as I like to overlock, it is much easier.

Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't do this with an ordinary dress? Is it just traditional, or is there a good reason? The fabric is a soft ikat cotton.

Many thanks!

I have seen more patterns setting in sleeves flat recently. You might still have to gather it up a bit to get it to sit flat but honestly… I’d go for it your way. You can always baste the side seams before overlocking the sleeve seem to check it sits ok
