Just Bought A Machine.

I just bought a machine and thought it would be the perfect time to shorten my mesh curtains. Please note, I don't have prop surface or tools. Im going to buy a self healing cutting mat and a long ruler because I'm working with a 30cm ruler because it's all I have.

I do not have experience as I just bought the machine. I didn't realise the fabric was bunched at the top and I think the place I bought it from made it poorly. I already cut the fabric with enough seam allowance. But I cut it skew and I was feeling despondent.

I'm hoping for tips or guidance for when I tackle it again. For now I'm going to put it away. I'll buy replacement curtains and also make other things to get comfortable and confident.

Thank you for all the help

Welcome! I think is very sensible to get replacements, so that you are not under pressure. I'm sure that you will be able to re-purpose the curtains for something (if not actual curtains).

You have made a good start. I don't want to give you a list of what you need as you can find that on other sites. But you will need a good big surface to spread your fabric out on. Most of us use tables, and put protectors over them. You may find that a large, foldable, cardboard mat is better - usually about 90 x 150cms, you can really spread the fabric out. They're fine if you're using scissors. You do need a self-healing mat if you are using a rotary cutter.

We all begin with simple things - an apron is a traditional first project. And find scraps (old sheets, things from charity shops) to practice your hems and seams.

And remember that you iron about as much as you sew!

Good luck, and come back with questions!

Hi, I'm sorry the curtains didn't quite turn out the way you wanted - definitely tricky to do with a 30cm ruler!

I have to be honest, I've never taken up curtains but I'm sure there are lots of people here who have. But I would probably measure up from the original hem rather than from the top down. that way you have a straight line to work with.
