What fabric are people using for toiles?

So I normally don't practice but after a disaster with a recent pattern sizing I want to have a practice run on my next pattern (has a zip, I'm nervous plus it's fitted). What fabric are people using for toiles?

Hi Karen, if you can - use something that is similar weight to the fabric you want to use for your final garment. You can buy calico fabric in different weights or if you have some cheap fabric, old duvet covers also work well for making toiles

I make lots of Calico/muslin toiles. I buy my Calico from Pound Fabrics. They sell it by the metre and on rolls.

I make toiles as I hate to cut into precious fabric and find later down the line I've made a mistake. For the sake of a couple of hours extra work I personally find it part of the fitting process.

I agree with both posts - I have also bought calico from Pound Fabrics but take a look at their other fabric as they have some at £1-2/metre which can also be used for toiles. I have also acquired some free fabric via freecycle or freegle to use for toiles and I also look for duvet covers in charity shops.

I always have to make a toile on woven patterns and often make two (sometimes more!) as I have several fit adjustments to make. It is also useful to do if you are making a pattern from a company you haven't used before to see how their block fits you.

I buy a huge roll of Calico from Pound Fabrics and make my toiles from that. It takes me ages to work through it as it's about 60 metres.

I'm currently down to my last 5 metres.! Eek

I have also seen or heard someone mention they bought large cotton tablecloths from the supermarket to use for toiles - often about 2m long

Yes. I have found beautiful old tablecloths from second-hand shops in linen.  When I  learn to post photos I will.  Lol

I use a mix of fabric depending on what I want and how I feel. Calico often just for figuring out a pattern I don't quite understand and for trying out a new technique. Old bed sheets and duvet covers are good too especially more drapey garments

If there's fabric in my stash that I know I won't use/wear, I'll use that for wearable toiles and then either have it as nightwear or I'll cut it up and use it as stuffing for cushions etc.

Years ago I skipped making the toile (muslin here in the US) and often regretted it and just didn't wear the items I spent time on.  Now I take the time on a first make from a new pattern.  I usually use a bedsheet that I  have or I buy twin size sets for about $3 US dollars from the second-hand shops.  I actually have worn them when I find a pretty print.

I started making toiles (muslins in the US) years ago after some significant changes in my waist.  I buy a bolt at a time from Vogue Fabrics.  They had a double wide unbleached muslin that's lasting me ages.

I haven't found a fabric for knit toiles but I've been looking at Girl Charlee recently.  They're prices are pretty good.

Oh I miss Girl Charlee - there used to be one run here in the UK, a franchise from the US one I guess) and they had the best selection of jersey fabrics!

They're back.  I don't know the story but I got an email a few months ago from them with Grand Opening.  I don't think it's the UK one.

Oh that's exciting, I didn't realise the US one had closed too! As far as I can tell it's not reopening here in the UK but I will definitely take a look at getting some shipped over!

Are you in Chicago area by chance?  Years ago I  went on a girls trip by train (about 4 hours) and we went to Vogue fabrics there and Fischmans I  think it was.  I still have stash from that trip. Probably 20 years or so. Lol

No, I'm on the East Coast.  We're running out of local shops here.

For toiles, a lot of people go with muslin or calico since they’re cheap, easy to sew, and behave similarly to many fashion fabrics. If your final fabric has stretch or drape (like silk or lightweight cashmere), try to find something with a similar feel so your fit is accurate.

I have started buying duvet sets in on sale.

A king size works out at about 10m.

I will use them for actual garments or toiles.
