I love buttons, but always use zips on skirts or trousers.

Agreed - buttons on tops and dresses, zips on skirts and trousers!

I have voted ‘something else’ only because I haven’t done button holes yet and only a couple of zips in a bag and a few pouches, so not actual garments.

I’ve said zipper because I do like an invisible zip, once you’ve done a couple and figured out how much easier it is to use basting thread to install before it even gets to the machine you’ll be using them in place of all other kinds of zips in dresses.

Poppers I’m a big fan of, I have two of the prym vario tools permanently set up for the larger metal poppers. (Male in one, female in the other so I don’t have to keep swapping them out)

Buttonholes are 100% dependent on your machine, it really should be as simple as bit of stabiliser, mark where the button hole is and let the machine go up and down again. I do not know why my Singer 6650 HD can do it flawlessly and the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 at 4x the price can’t but here we are. If I were the god queen I’d make sewing machine manufacturers stand before me and explain why they think it’s ok to not test the buttonhole function properly before release and allow beginners to hate buttons over something that is very clearly not their fault.

Ties, I have a deep and unending hate for bias binding so always give patterns with ties the side eye, if it’s regular ties then sure but if it’s a continuation of the bias binding then I’m going to have to decide if it’s worth my time using regular ties and creating facing as the good lord intended.

Hook and eye are horrible and a pox on their creator.

oooh... some strong opinions here!! Hehe! I agree with you about the buttonhole function on sewing machines - it should be a pretty basic and standard application on a machine and be rigorously tested!

Hook and eye - have their place but they always look messy if you look close enough.

Why the hatred for bias binding? Usually it's the other way around for a lot of people who hate facings!

I have a theory that people only ever use boas binding because they think creating a facing is hard, but the thing is that once you ‘get’ how to create a facing using a pattern piece you never go back, and I’m not talking about a simple neck facing which flaps everywhere. In that instance I’d be creating an all in one facing or a lining. Bias binding is fiddly, takes a long time to do perfectly, and I really dislike having to fold in and catch anything on a curve.

Aaah I see! Yes I think you’re right most people don’t like the neck facing as it still rolls out even if you’ve understitched it

Pull up or overs are my preference, followed closely by snaps.
Also, what is a popper. Google search is letting me down on this one!

I quite like buttons but use zips for trousers. I don't like hooks and eyes that much and I can guarantee that I'll mess up poppers/snaps. However a fastening free garment has much to recommend itself to me.

I have to admit I've never added poppers/snaps I don't think - definitely worried on messing those up and would rather do buttons!

What you need there is a stiletto awl, you line both sides up, basting or pinning if you are nervous, then stab through both sides at once. The holes you make are the starter holes for the snaps :)
