Drooling over this cotton sateen - never used this fabric before. Any beginner/ intermediate pattern recommendations!? https://www.blackbirdfabrics.com/en-us/products/sunday-brunch-cotton-sateen-periwinkle-multi
Pattern Rec For Confident Beginner
My photos are not the best I'm afraid. This top is made with a French cotton sateen, which was a 'rescued' fabric from the now sadly defunct Offset Warehouse.
I love this top, which is now over 5 years old. I chose a simple top because of the bold pattern. it is a favourite of mine, a simple top that I drafted on a Michelle Pye course.
I'd suggest any simple top / tunic to showcase the great print and the drape. I found it quite easy to sew with, it frayed a little, but not as much as some.
Hope it goes well.
What type of garments do you wear? In my experience, starting with the fabric is risky! Not suggesting you abandon the fabric! Just suggesting you think about what you wear most and we can then make suggestions for that type of garment! (This is from someone who now has more dresses than I will ever wear!!!)
Good point. At the moment, I wear lots of tops and pants, but I am branching out to skirts and dresses as the sewing bug becomes further burrowed in me! I did buy myself some elastic thread to try to learn how to shirr (spelling)? I haven't dabbled in doing anything really fitted. I've done a successful fern top (https://patternscoutstudio.com/products/fern-top-pdf-sewing-pattern?srsltid=AfmBOoocbWpZeUTxDI_cgGQPy41KlfMn1v4LNOAV5PtiPDNuJkN6StUH), otherwise I have stuck to less structured garments (with lovely seam finishes). I could definitely see me just making a boxy top with a ruffle peplum (for the thousandth time - but I do wear them!)
Cannot help but speak to my own experience and preferences so feel free to ignore! 😂 for me, the fabric you linked to screams summer skirt - a swishy, flouncy one! With all of the colours in it, you could wear it with lots of different coloured T shirts. Sometimes gorgeous patterns and colours can be overwhelming when all over in a dress, or on a top next to the face (again IMO).
Perhaps along these lines https://thefoldline.com/products/sew-liberated-songbird-skirt-and-tank-top
There’s also this very cute top with a small peplum! https://thefoldline.com/products/french-navy-vetiver-top
Whilst my experience of shopping with Minerva has been beyond negative, they do have a lot of sewn up examples provided by their community in different fabric types. If you search for sateen cotton you’ll be able to see what their community have made with that fabric type. I’ve found that to be helpful on occasions.
Yes, after I wrote last I was also considering a skirt - I have had good luck with the donovan skirt from helens closet (https://helensclosetpatterns.com/collections/bottoms/products/donovan-skirt). And it wouldn't take up TOO much fabric - I am only 5" so I do the shorter view!. I love the idea of doing a little top too so you can go all out with both or mix and match... Thank you!
p.s. have you sewn the french navy vetiver top? it is so cute! My next big step for my sewing learning is to do buttons - I live in fear of closures (zippers too) - but I really want to learn buttons! I sew on a sears kenmore circa 1960s - I DO have the original buttonhole piece so I am trying to pluck up the courage to just test it out on some scraps - for some reason having a block to do it!
You are not alone. I have yet to meet a sewist who doesn't fear buttonholes! All I can say is, the more you do, the less intimidating they are! Do let us know what you decide and we'll need to see pictures too!!!
This fabric is beautiful!
If you’re venturing into sewing skirts I love the True Bias Mave skirt, you can choose the length and whether you want to add any tiers.
