Jeans Patterns

What are everyones favourite jeans patterns? I've sewn one pair of actual jeans (not including the Helen's Closet Falconer Pants) which weren't a huge success.

So I'd love to know if you have sewn jeans before which ones have worked well for you?

Mine are the Just My Luck jeans by Izzie (formerly Forest & Thread). I have 3 pairs and denim for 2 more. I love a barrel leg and also their measurements are mine to within 1cm so no alterations needed. Susie

I haven't sewn that many jeans before, but I do love both pair of my Closet Core Morgan jeans. I sewed the Fibre Mood Clover Jeans for the first time this past year and love them too. I want to sew the Megan Nielsen Ash jeans. I have the pattern and the fabric. I just need to get started with this project.

Perhaps a project for the new year?! The Morgan jeans look so good, I haven't seen the Clover ones though!

I've only made one pair of jeans, the Megan Nielsen Ash Jeans, which are in a stretch denim. They are a bit snug, but they are supposed to have negative ease. I think I would just take less seam allowance next time, rather than going up a size, as I think that may be too big. I made the narrow leg (not skinny) but will probably try the wide leg next time. My sewing machine didn't like the topstitching thread so I just used a contrast colour sew-all thread.

These look fantastic Diane! Shame your machine struggled with topstitching thread, did you keep your universal needle or swap to a denim? I think you can get topstitching needles too which have a bigger hole for the thicker thread.

Thank you Hayley. I was using a denim needle for the fabric, and swapped to a topstich needle for the topstitch thread, but it was making a funny noise so I just tried the denim needle but it still seemed a bit strange so I just used the normal Gutermann thread with the denim needle and all worked fine.

I have made the Jamie Jeans by Named which were the first pair of jeans I made. I loved the front pocket construction. They were a skinny style with a seam up the front. Then I made a few pairs of the Closet Core Ginger Jeans and they have had lots of wear over the years, again a skinny jean and  still being worn. I made a straight pair of the Megan Nielsen Dawn Jeans in rigid denim - again these get worn often. I have also made the Heroine jeans by Merchant and Mills which have a slim fit through the waist and hips with straight legs. The most recent pair I made were the Roans by Emporia Patterns which are barrel legged. I was unsure about these initially as they seemed quite wide but they have grown on me and I really like them now.
I like sewng jeans as denim is stable to sew with, and would say don't be intimidated just work through the process a step at a time. The only adjustments I tend to have to do is sometimes grading between hips/waist (pear shaped) or removing a wedge at the waist and altering the length by an inch or two

Oh wow you've made loads Ali! Would you say you have a favourite out of these? Which instructions did you find easiest to follow?

Having never made jeans before I'm intrigued to see what everyone has sewn. Jeans will be on my makes list for 2026.

I have fabric purchased from the Guthrie and Ghani sale and the Cashmerette Ames jeans to start with

The Ames jeans work really well for me. After making a toile, I realised that they were the most comfy trousers i had ever made, so they are now my standard trouser pattern, in stretch gaberdine, nd without all the 'jeans' accessories.

I'm currently working on my first ever jeans (I avoided making jeans for years), making the Itch to Stitch Belleville jeans.
The toille is done, alterations have been made and the fabric has been cut. Now I just need to find the time to sew it up.

I've made the Closet Core Ginger Jeans a few times and really liked them. It says they're skinny jeans, but both pairs I've made came out more like narrow straight leg than truly skinny. It's a mission cutting out all the pieces of it though!

And I've heard good things about the Helen's Closet Brooks Jeans too, but not tried them myself.

There definitely feels like a lot of pieces involved in jeans! The Ginger jeans do look great though!

My favourite are the Megan Nielsen Dawn jeans, I've made 3 pairs and have plans for more. They needed slight low butt and sway back adjustments but they were great to sew, the instructions are really clear 😊

Hi Hayley!   I actually haven't sewn jeans yet, but I have it on my radar to make the Love Notions Legato Jeans.   I've got the pattern and had ordered some denim online, but when it arrived, I thought it might be a bit too light for jeans, even though they had described it as medium weight.  (It would probably make a good dress though...it's still lovely fabric!). Anyway, maybe I'll make a toile first out of something else to get the fit right, while I look for some new jeans fabric.
And if you're inclined to share, I'm curious to hear why the Falconer pants were a challenge 💁‍♀️

Thank you, Hayley!

Hi Nancy - ah so... what I wrote came out a little confusing. The Falconer Pants were great - but they maybe wouldn't be considered typical jeans due to the construction. They can be made in loads of fabrics but don't have the typical pockets, yokes and other bits that standard jeans have. The instructions for these were great!

The one pair of jeans I have made was the Closet Core Ames jeans on a workshop and the pattern was great but some alterations were made which ended up with a bad fit unfortunately and weren't wearable.

Hi Haley!  Thank you!  I'm sorry to hear your jeans didn't work out, but thank you so much for clarifying my misunderstanding!  And it's good to hear that the Falconer Pants are winners 👍

My go to jeans pattern started off as a Jalie but I have changed it and adapted it so much to fit my shape and leg style that I'm not sure I can say it is the Jalie anymore!! It is however now a tnt so although I look at other jeans patterns I have no incentive to adapt another one!

I also have the Itch to Stitch Mountain View pull on jeans. Those are lovely and needed much less fitting although I removed the seam on the back of the leg.

My son's jeans pattern is a Kwik Sew mens pattern, again adapted to fit him but such an easy sew and the best fly instructions I have ever come across.

Glenda I think you might be my jeans sewing muse!! I love how much you've taken a single pattern and adapted it to be the absolute perfect fit for you!! Hope you're getting on ok with the second pair for your son, I know you're keen to crack on with other things now
