Project: Nina Lee Kewbellow Jumpsuit For A Charity Ball On 27 March

Okay here we go, I have a charity ball to go to on 27 March and am in need of an outfit. Not being a dress girl, I am going for a jumpsuit in a hopefully fancy enough fabric.

I am going to make a toile of the bodice to make sure I can get decent fit and can use my trouser block so I know the bottom half will fit nicely.

Fabric of choice is a viscose sateen from Cloth House in a navy.

Toile is underway, on first try, the fit doesn’t feel right but the toile isn’t secure atm not sure whether I just need to finish the toile so it’s all secure or whether I will need to make some adjustments. The sleeves are definitely too tight and there seems to be too much material around the bust as I don’t fill it.

I’ll see how it feels when the toile is finished and then have a think about whether I can work out the fitting adjustments or not.

Its looking good so far, are the sleeves tight around the bicep, the armhole or is it coming from across your shoulders?

The bicep I think. I think I need to attach the zip at the back properly first so I can check whether it’s too tight around the back or shoulders.

Sewn up another toile in a larger size, which seems to fit much better. I do still have too much fabric in the bust so will be reading up on a small bust adjustment.

The bottoms are not wide enough so I will be adjusting my trouser block for the leg width of the pattern but plan to add an elastic waistband to use the bottoms as PJ’s later.

The photo does a terrible job at showing it off I know and the fabric is awful (hence using it for the toile). Getting there with it though 😊

After adding a zip to the 2nd toile I’ve realised that the 2nd one is way too big. So back to the original toile and added a zip to see how that looks, I just pinned it to the top of the trousers of the full toile to check hence the very fetching outfit šŸ˜‚

Planned adjustments are:

  • Use smaller size for the bodice but grade out slightly at the waist.

  • I like the idea of a clear waistband rather than the bodice joining directly to the bottoms without a transition so add a waistband adjusting the bodice and bottoms slightly to allow the addition.

  • Use the larger size for the sleeves as those felt a lot nicer fit.

  • Adjust the bust, trying out folding darts in different pieces, the top inside of the bust is where I have too much fabric so plan to take out a teeny wedge on the inside to shorted the length of the curve. (Not done this before but I don’t think that will be difficult to work out)

  • I have too much fabric at my lower back so I want to take a little bit of length out of the back.

I’ve not done this before so if anyone has any ideas please let me know. At the moment I think I’ll have a go at pinning it, and then trying it on and adjusting the pins until I get something that looks right and then adjust the pattern piece to take out the pinned section.

  • The width of the back at the top around my neck also has too much fabric so I am going to have a go at adding some darts in the back to take out some of the width out of the neck without taking any width from the across the shoulders.

I think this should work, again I think I’ll pin it and play around until I get something that fits okay.

  • Adjust the legs to increase the width to make them more wide leg.

That should be easy as the original pattern pieces will have the right width.

I’ve just been told by my dad that I need to smile as I look sad. I’ve told him that’s my ā€˜thinking face!’ šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

This looks great. Whenever I have to remove length from the back I pin out a wedge until I get it right. Not certain how to do this around the zipper.

It's all looking pretty good so far! The fit at the front across bust and waist looks really good.

The neckline adjustment I told you about last night is on my blog here -https://sewhayleyjane.com/blog/shoulder-and-neckline-adjustments - halfway down the page.

The back adjustment you need is called a sway back adjustment - for when you have too much length in the back, often due to way our backs curve in before curving out at the base.
