Having discussed my fear of buttonholes in a recent Thready Sewing Social and receiving lots of support and advice, I have made a start 😳 This is 5 years after I started making my own clothes, so it’s long overdue! I’m making the Matchy Matchy Perfect Puff Sleeve Blouse. I already have 4 of these, but none of those have the button front. So far it’s all cut out and the button plackets interfaced. The fabric is a very lightweight cotton voile, so I’ll use some tear away stabiliser under the stitching. Otherwise, my machine will certainly eat it. I will be visiting it again in a little while and will add some photos then.
My First Make With Buttonholes 😳🫣
This is fantastic Annie, I'm so excited to see how you get on and really pleased we were able to give you the little nudge you needed!
Here are early images (prior to stitching). Turns out the (specially purchased) tear away stabiliser is a nightmare. I used it and it didn’t tear away from the stitches at all. I had to stitch another line, then pull out the original line of stitches to remove the stabiliser 🙄 So I’m back to tissue paper. I’ll need to use it for all seams with this as the fabric is so fine.
🫣 oh no!!
The fabric is beautiful, where is it from?
Sarah’s Simple Life Fabrics. She retired last year. I spent far too much at her little shop. I miss it!
I tried stabilizers in the past and didn't like them. The tear away wouldn't tear away. I tried the wash away but didn't want to wait until the project was ready for the washing machine. So I just dipped the seams in water to remove them. Made the entire project stiffer.
This seems good so far. Are you doing the buttonholes manually or with a buttonhole stitch?
The roll of stabiliser wasn’t cheap either. 🤷♀️ Can’t imagine what I could use it for now. Thankfully, I have buttonhole stitches on my machine.
Lots of sewing on this during this morning’s Thready sewcial. Sleeves added, side seams sewn up and bias binding added to the neck. The plackets had been added previously. Pressing is still required on all those seams and around the neckline.
It’s done, yay! 🎉🎊 Not perfect, but good enough and I’m very pleased. Now to pull it off in more expensive embroidered fabric.
Annie I’m so proud of you!! You did the buttons, how did it feel? They look great
I’ve been grinning for hours 😃
Lovely work! And glad you conquered those buttonholes.
Thank you Glenda. 🙂 Hope to see you at the weekend social
It looks lovely. Good job!
Thank you Akann57
