Favourite Confidence Boosting Sewing Patterns

It doesn't matter what size or shape you are, we all have days where we feel a little less than confident, a little bit bleh... or just fine! But sometimes we stumble upon a sewing pattern that puts a little pep in our step and makes us feel awesome!

What sewing pattern do you wear the gives you a little confidence boost?

My current favourite for everyday wear is the Closet Core Jenna shirt in a blue and white striped cotton, it feels a little bit smart, but by rolling the sleeves up and pairing with jeans it's what I call classy-casual!

I also love my Pauline Alice Ibi dress - the maxi-est maxi dress!!

The Reeta Shirt dress from Named Clothing (although I only ever put one of the patch pockets on the chest because I can never get them to look level!!! I suspect one boob is droopier than the other!!)

It's fitted in a roomy way at the top, I like the sleeve length, and the skirt has just enough swish!

Don't wear it everyday - but it's definitely one of those items that puts a spring in my step. I feel 'put-together' when I wear it.

This is so great Donnie, and an excellent example of how different patterns work for different bodies - I tried this pattern and really didn't like it on me - I think I'm not a fan of that style of t-shirt sleeve in a woven fabric on my arms, combined with other features on my body I felt it aged me.

One of the benefits of being older - not much can age me now! I do it all by myself!!! 😂

Hello, new member here 🙂I’m in Brisbane, Australia. My favourite pattern is a pin tucked nightdress that I’ve hacked with darts, pockets, and resized to fit my gemerous body. I’ve made it in flowy rayons, crisp cottons, gone shorter and longer, and made it in heavy cotton drill to wear over leggings and tshirts. I currently have 6 and I haven’t finished making them. The pattern is Butterick B5762. I love how the tucks work to keep the top part fairly fitted and then flowy below. I feel absolutely gorgeous when I wear any of these versions.

The Trillium Tee by Peekaboo patterns is a great tee with an inverted pleat in the back for a bit of interest. Feels more elevated than a standard tee.

The Hansie Top and a self drafted wide leg pants. It makes me feel comfortable at the same time put together and easy to stitch.

I hadn't heard of the Hansie top until a couple of weeks ago and now I must have seen it about 20 times in different places and conversations... perhaps it's a sign!

Yes it is easy fit grown on sleeves and depending on what fabric you make it from, you can wear it as casual or outgoing. It has a shape to it rather than being boxy. Definitely give it a try if you haven't dear, bonus that it is a free pattern by seamworks.

I am though and through a jeans, t-shirt and trainers kind gal but I made a couple Sew Over It Nomi dresses last year and it has been a real surprise to me how nice they have made me feel.

I’m going to say from the outset that I don’t think the website photos do the pattern much justice. The pics on the front of the paper pattern I have, which was free in simply sewing mag a few years ago, definitely don’t. However, the v-neck option is really lovely. In the right fabric, I think it could work well for day or evening wear.

I have hacked the pattern a little to suit my shape better but my tweaks are minimal. I felt really nice on a recent break in Tenby when we went out for an evening walk before drinks and food.

I love the nomi dress too. I've made it at least 5 times, a couple of times in a sequin jersey and it is very dressy, I wore it to a wedding. Other times it was cotton jersey, so casual for out and about during the summer.

I hadn't spotted that. Exciting!

My son mentioned Cashmerette in his English GCSE oral! I popped a message to Jenny to let her know and she was so kind to reply. :-)

Always the SewOverit Maisie dress. The shape suits my figure. I always get fab comments on it. I've made it 4 times. The last one in blue I made on ThreadySetGo socials. Cut it out one session, sewed it up on 2 other sessions.

It has been the Matchy Matchy Sewing Club Perfect Puff Sleeve Top (the version without buttons). It has got my sewjo going again several times. I have 5 of these now and I’m a bit bored with it. I don’t have another yet, but then I’m in a phase of enjoying challenging myself with new techniques.

The All Well box top!!! I’ve made so so many of them (almost one for every day of the week) out of linen, quilting cotton, tans law, double gauze (see image) etc. with and without the ruffle, as a dress etc. this was my gateway pattern to garment sewing and I still love it and it’s my go to pallet cleanser-especially when some other project doesn’t work out I know I can make a lovely top in a few days (even with kids and work happening too)!

Their book was a great intro for me and I still go back to it for bias bound necks, french seams etc.

Definitely one of those belly friendly tops. When i sew it straight (without the ruffle) I typically do a split hem (is that what it is called?) so there is no pulling near the hips/waist but I still get the clean lines of a straight top.
