I saw someone who used the foot peddle on the table next to the machine and operated it by hand. That would of course leave only one hand to guide the fabric through but it may tide you over until you can test a new machine.

I've had similar problems with a cable knit. In the end I overlocked the inner neckband edge in a single layer then stitched in the ditch without folding over the seam allowance to reduce the thickness. Pleased with the outcome, eventually!

Oh no Han!!! I'm so sorry you've run into trouble - the cable knits can be really thick and when sewing through multiple layers it's tricky! Perhaps a contrast neckband in some ribbing could work as an alternative?
